Hi all, take it easy as first post on here. I have recently completed my eal domestic installers course and 2382 17th edition. I am renovated my large four bedroom home and plan to rewire the house.

I have had an isolation switch fitted by the DNO so I can start the work safely. The kitchen will be having two ovens, induction hob, micro needs to be on its own circuit and large amount of lighting and other ciriuits going on in house. Due to this and to future proof, I am planning to install two cu. Two 10 way split Rcd, directly next to each other in the garage. I currently have 25mm tails from the meter into my isolating switch and then directly into my cu. There appears to be enough room in the isolating switch to double up the tails. Is this acceptable instead of a Henly block.

Is it sufficient to then have Dno isolating switch and then a main switch in each CU.

Many Thanks in advance

Suz

What about people who have maybe worked as mates or labourers. Then decided to do a quick course to get qualifications?

I am not saying these courses are a good thing. But not all people who do them will be totally incompetent and capable of being a decent sparks.

Mates and labours are to assist in un skilled work like cable pulling, chasing out and the like, so no not competent IMO

When I was working as an unqualified mate I did all the chasing, tray and trunking fab and install, cable pulling, conduit bending etc. As you would expect.

I also did SWA termination, fault finding, second fixing of large 3 phase DBs, data and fire alarm installs, panel board installs, dado trunking systems and more.

The much older approved sparks that I worked with at this time also ditched in with the donkey work as they were keen to pas on experience and not too proud to work beneath their station.

My point is that you can never tell how much experience someone has from their "title"

I once read an article in professional electrician where they interviewed a sparks who wired a radial for EVERY appliance in the kitchen, he said he only ever used radials never rings, I'm sure profession electrician only put it in to wind up decent sparks!

anyways to OP, a single consumer unit could be better, I believe mk do 21 way if you really need it?IMO you would be much better off with rcbo protection for circuits

I read that one....
I think he said he used an individual RCBO circuit for every appliance all wired through a large grid isolator panel. "When I explain the extra benefits to the customer they are happy to pay the extra cost"

WTF???!!!!
What F'ing benefits???
Its nonsense. I once second fixed a two bed holiday log cabin, first fixed by another firm which went bust. They had around 30 circuits...Im not bloody suprised they went bust I did an identical cabin from scratch and used 10 circuits.

It seems to me that you could be deemed to be competent by knowledge and experience and have absolutely no qualifications at all. This is the case surely for many competent people disenfranchised by the Part P legislation who then feel they need a qualification but who find that their short route to qualification is derided. On the other hand, and to take a balanced view, the kinds of question which are often asked do make you wonder exactly what knowledge and experience the posters have. But at least they ask.

The backhanders he got from the manufacturers for writing that article ?

I was asked to 2nd fix a house that another firm had 1st fixed and buggered off, every room had its own radial for sockets and radial for lighting, there were 3 circuits for the garage from the house cu, one circuit for each outside light, i simply couldn't believe my eyes, there were 36 in total in a 5 bedroom house! Unbelievable, i never got the job but i really don't think i'd have wanted it!

Maybe they where European "electricians" ;)

2 CUs is a great Idea.
Just use 16mm tails instead of 25mm, cheaper anyway.
Then if you still cant double them up, cut some strands off, ok as long as you leave at least 50% of the strands.

Ask me another.

Better still get a labour to do it

It’s quite common for an electrician to criticise another’s work as you will rarely get everything perfect.
