agree with ponty. . no matter how good and neat trunking is, on bare brick it looks diabolical. i used brown trunking on mine, only because it's on woodgrain pvc, not brick. and the trunking is flush to the floor so doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. on a bare brick one i did a few weeks ago, i cable tied the 2.5mm to the wall ties and while nobody was looking dumped the fibreglass that was above the cable in the place it belonged ... the bin.

The points in the post of mine were just guides, and the one I would be particularly concerned with is the building regs one, as the regs do not allow cables in cavity's due to moisture tracking along the cable from the outer wall to the inner skin, which I think as far as building regs normally go is quite a valid one.

I do agree with what you are saying here, however we could argue this point everytime we take a cable through an external wall.

As Malc correctly points out, the guidelines quoted are just that, guidelines. There are no regulations expressly forbidding cables in a cavity (unless someone would like to prove otherwise).

The guidelines quote quite reasonable objections to putting cables in cavities in general, but all those objections can be overcome with good design and workmanship. So, on small scale projects like a dwarf wall conservatory, it is perfectly possible to put the cables in the cavity.

Thanks guys!! Two more questions (please!) Lighting circuit - The 3 core + copper trace coming through the wall from the Conservatory - how should this be connected to the power ring, direct or via a spur fuse (rating?) Once this work is completed is there a certificate of conformity issued?

The cable samples have been sent off and an answer is expected Tomorrow afternoon - will post result.

Cable markings: I have had a good look and can make out some markings with the aid of a magnifying glass - the letters CE show up, there are others which I cannot decipher.

CE marking (also known as CE mark) is a mandatory conformance mark on many products placed on the market in the European Economic Area (EEA). With the CE marking on a product the manufacturer ensures that the product is in conformity with the essential requirements of the applicable EC directives.[1] The letters "CE" stand for "Conformité Européenne" ("European Conformity").[2]

The lighting circuit would be via a fused spur. A Electrical Installation Certificate will be issued on completion. This will cover Design, construction,Testing & Inspecting. Not Valid if not accompanied by Schedule of inspection and schedule(s) of test results.
The Local Building Authority would be notified via the electricians Part P Registration Body, or notice and documents direct with fee.

Hi, Just had Draka's initial report on the cables in question:

Resistance/m within spec, Conductor diameter within spec,

Draka cannot identify the manufacturer from the markings. Will do further tests and report back tomorrow. The blank cable reel - Draka say some distributors buy in vast quantities and re-reel per 100m on blank reels - a practise to be frowned upon.

Draka have updated on the cable - It is manufactured in Greece to BASEC spec so it is OK to use.

I shall discuss the circuit with the electrical contractor armed with all the info you guys have provided and report back once the installation is complete.

Thanks for all your help - Mike.
