Very sensible approach, but it has meant that I've got no friends anymore ... on the plus side you are building something to pass on, perhaps ?

Scruffix gave me ÂŁ70 in vouchers, with no minimum spend, for signing up to the Electricfix catalog so it would have been rude not to indulge. Used the last one this week, a little electronic distance measure. No frills, no batteries and no case but for twenty quid, or a freebie voucher it does the job admirably. unlikely to be nicked on-site, unless they are really desperate/cheap.

I can tell you right now that the wall by your knees is not 5.73 metres away from you! Take it back and get your money back!
Trouble is when we get new toys/tools, we as grown up boys/men walk around the house measuring stuff or wanting to drill stuff or even . . . . Go to work, just to use it.
Our families must think we are nutters - but we know the truth don't we?

It's gone past the thinking stage mate , trust me they know ;):).

When I get a new power tool, generally, I will present it on the coffee table, periodically pick it up and examine it and then re seat in on the coffee table and repeat when necessary.

So sad.
I find myself making excuses to use it either around the house or in the garage, God knows how many pointless holes the poor garage wall has now

Just stop & think Mathew: Now you have to go & buy a shiny new filling knife or pointing trowel (maybe both), You need something to fill in the holes you made ;):).
how about a couple of covert mini cameras so his missus can see what he's up to in the garage while she's watching constipation street.
