Short course trained operatives

I think for 1 day or a week every singe member should have the same avatar.
I don't know about others but I recognize the avatar before the username most times.

Hi all, I am a two week wonder, I paid £2700 for my course including the 2391 which I undertook a week later. I 'wanted' to be an electrician because of my grandfather but due to financial restraints I was unable to start until my mid twenties and couldn't afford an apprenticeship wage. I had two years experience prior working part time evenings and weekends with an 'old timer' and wanted to leave the dead end job desperately. I worked for a further two years along side another fully qualified spark part time whilst maintaining my old job. I then started employment with a firm and have continued to grow my knowledge. I don't know half of what some do but then I don't try to be what they are and do not try to undertake what they do.

After nine years I Now have the task of completing a college course that my tutor says is pointless for me so that I can have a piece of paper to make everyone happy that I am worth employment should I chose to move on in the world.

So you are a 9 Year wonder that's not a fast track route is it. I know lots of old boys with no papers and they are fantastic Electrician's, the whole Electrical Trainee rant by everyone is not so much that they take a 5 week course it is that they then go self employed and start charging the public to practice on their homes.
Anyway I am not going to bang on about that.
Thanks for being honest mate and explaining how you got to where you are, that's what I was hoping to get from this thread.

Little unfair me thinks.

It is interesting that a thread which purports to start with good intentions soon degenerates into a mindless diatribe about avatars!
I have no problem I did Electrical Trainee 2382,2392,2394,2395 after 25 years as a director of a multi function property department and after 30 years of buying derelict houses refurbishing them including plumbing electrics ( supervised by qualified sparks etc).
I stick to what I know domestic and if I don't know I find out! Rather than just go ahead and install crap.
Many of the old school Electrical Trainee bashers should think again!! Better to have someone mature who knows there limitations and is committed to further training than some totally unqualified "for cash merchant".
Also some of you forget qualifications and time served mean nothing without integrity and the desire to go the best job you can. I have seen more crap installs by so called time served sparky's who just happen to never issue the paperwork than Electrical Trainee who do their best.
So in summary guys give it a damned rest!
Oh and as an aside I'm also legally qualified a Chartered Surveyor and know a hell of a lot about buildings.
So in summary go ahead give me a kicking. It will be fun especially for those of you who think your opinion matters which in reality of course it doesn't.
Alternatively those highly skilled members with countless years experience could turn this site into a brilliant asset admired by all. At the moment it tends to revolve around a few and there selective negativity.
Finally to the many Electrical Trainee on this site grow some balls interact or become a plumber.
We all have much to learn! Those to be criticised are those that think they know it all or who don't ask for help when they need it. Those to be kicked are the people who just don't give a damn!

Learning new and different things are what separate us from the Apes (no offence:stooge_curly Think about the benefits some short courses have given us,First Aid is a good example,one day that could,and does,save lives. I have done loads,Confined space,Chainsaw carving,dry-stone walling,plastic welding,stained glass making etc etc. I have also wrote and delivered courses from one day to five days,and hope too,these were of worth. The problem occurs when people think that they can leap from these fresh inputs,to earning a living from said input. Variety is the spice of life,and i would have no more faith in someone who had 5 years of degrees only,than someone who had 5 years of work,only. Varying proportions of both theory and practice are required,in my opinion. What i do know for sure,is there is no end to the learning journey and to say that any method was a certainty to sufficient knowledge,would be folly. :coolgleamA:

I did a Electrical Trainee course and it served me well.

After a more than a few years out of the industry I was out of touch, out of date and severely lacking in confidence.

The course I went on got me up to date plus the 2391.

If the calibre of student that was on my course is anything to go by then I wouldn't trust a Electrical Trainee without any previous or future training with rewiring a plug top.

Although I must admit they were mostly nice guys I would happily have a beer with.

They were almost all retraining with redundancy money.

In defense of the training centre my tutor made it clear from day 1 that this course did not make you a competent spark.

It only gave you the grounding to get a job with one.

Don't blame the guys that fall for the sales patter it's the training centres and scams that are to blame.

I am a Electrical Trainee, I spent seven and a half years in the marines and then started driving hgv's when I left. I didnt really know what was required to be a proper electrician and was seduced by the short course and the MOD paid for some of it.

I have a grand total of maybe a months practical experience on commerical sites and as such i stick firmly in the realm of domestic work as that is what i know. I do have aspirations of completing an NVQ one day but until i am more financially stable i cant

I did a one day corse once , it was free and it was all about fitting a wireless alarm, the anther corse I did was about 5 years did it when I was about 16 years old, not all people do it then but when they get older or loss they jobs think I will have a go at that I can change a light switch, good luck to them it just makes more work for us at the end of day, OK we have to put up with post like fitted a fuse box today with RCD on left and RCD on right but the bits in the middle go's pop I did test it but WTF is a MFT all I have is a screw driver with a light BOLB on it can you please help me as this is my fist job and the man at the test place said I can earn £1500 a job, I do have a wife, 2 small kids, dog and a cat to feed,
Think I should stop writing this cr-p and carry on drinking the Friday night beer , sorry for wasting you time reading this and for the bad spelling but haho that the iPhone
