Advice needed on a sewage pump

BS EN 60204-1:2006+A1:2009 Safety of machinery. Electrical equipment of machines. General requirements BS EN ISO 13849-1:2008 Safety of machinery. Safety-related parts of control systems. General principles for design would apply here. Is the sewage tank a hazardous...

    Maintenance

Very true, lots of companies have got rid of maintenance departments and contract it out. At my last employer, we set up a maintenance department to support our customers who bought our packaging machinery and packaging lines, started with a fitter and an electrician and two vans. They were...

    Maintenance

I would give it a month, and see what work is done by the outside contractors. Maybe the outside contractors will fix breakdowns at short notice/nights/weekends etc. Would you be prepared to do that? Don't make a rod for your own back. I've been one of those outside contractors, getting...

    Electrical engineering

My apprentice at work completed his HNC Elec Eng last year, and I gave him some help on the maths. It seemed about A level standard in the particular areas covered, but without the same breadth of topics covered in A level. It was nowhere near the level I went to on my Elec Eng degree, in 1990...

anyone recommend a good capacitive proximity sensor

Depending on the duct size, Endress and Hauser Soliphant FTE30 paddle type switches are very reliable we have found. They give a NO/NC volt free contact, and are suitable for ATEX zone 20 installation.

ALTIVAR 312 and mppt power tracking for a solar pumping system

On a lot of VFD's the DC bus voltage is available as a parameter in the drive, which you can then map to an analog o/p. Not on the Altivar unfortunately, but certainly on Siemens Micromaster. So you could use...

Age of those who can build a control panel and control a process

Why would I want the control panel wireman to write the PLC software? Why would I want the control panel designer to physically build the panel? My own background is PLC/DCS software design, writing and commissioning, and general control system design including panel and safety system design...

    Calculating inverter for motor

Tried chokes, they didn't make an appreciable difference.

    Calculating inverter for motor

It was because they were very small (0.18kW) motors on long (300m) cable runs. Something to do with cable charging currents from memory.

    Calculating inverter for motor

Currently commissioning an MCC fitted with ABB ACS 800 drives, some of which ABB oversized wrt motor rating plate because of long cable runs.

    Calculating inverter for motor

It really isn't always that simple, length of cable run and other factors can also affect the choice of inverter size.

Help with wiring up a contactor and stop switch to a VFD

Why multiple contactors? The risk assessment and safety circuit design will dictate the number of contactors, and it may be that only a single contactor is required to reliably perform the emergency stop function. It may also be the case that the VFD has a SIL rated STO input, so no safety...

Evidence of rising incompetence in my field.

Typical of panels on machinery manufactured in continental Europe, especially Germany.

3 phase motor star delta staring controls

Main contactor connects L1-U1, L2-V1, L3-W1, delta contactor connects L1-W2, L2-U2, L3-V2, which gives a clockwise phase rotation. The star contactor connects the other ends of the 3 windings together, the delta contactor connects them to phases so the motor is connected in delta. All done...

    pressure transducer

It's not that kind of barrier, it's a kind of signal conditioner which will power up the instrument, not ATEX kit.

    Dc rectifier

I've swapped a few failed ones, the only test I've ever done on them is measuring the DC output voltage, typically 180V if they are powered from 2 phases, about 120VDC if they are off phase and star point. If they're not working then bin em because they're a sealed unit.

    Dc rectifier

Bit like one of these... http://download.sew-eurodrive.com/download/pdf/9PD0049.pdf The other symbols look like thermistor symbols with a bit extra on. Dont think they are though.

    Safety Circuits Round two

Your other issue will be Rockwell will have done their calcs based on Rockwell components, using the data (mean time to failure etc) for those specific components. If you starting chucking other manufacturers, or indeed different Rockwell components into the mix (Siemens do safety contactors...
