What have you been up to lately?

Yep, Scotland. Nope - we got an apprentice...it's early days. Mown out with work at the moment - every man and his dog seems to want their lighting changed to led. Moved to sunny Sunderland but still work from Bradford - now that's a commute!

Advice on insulation resistance test procedure :)

We found a dog training collar for nuisance barking that consisted of a microphone and 2 probes built into a collar. Decided it looked a bit dodgy for the mutts but stepson decided we were too soft, strapped it rouond his neck and started barking. Funniest thing I've seen when the collar zapped...

Metrel eurotest xe & UPS odd readings???

Hi, sorry for being as clear as mud :-( lol but that's early mornings and pressure for you! There's 2 of the units and they're 300Kva made by chloride IIRC. Big beasts leastwise. I've spoken to the landlords rep this morning and he's arranging for the guys who normally service the things to...

    Earthing a metal shed

Oh dear GOD! Totally unexpected, never heard it before and so funny I nearly blew my entire brew down my nose. Thanks for that...

    17th edition regs 2008 (2011)

Breaks my heart too, so I've hung on to every set since the yellow 15th. Bright side is they sometimes have details that have been omitted from the latest versions for oldie worldie pieces of kit that you come across when testing (old BS specs etc)

Metrel eurotest xe & UPS odd readings???

Hi all, I'm testing an unoccupied office block and I'm having some major grief with my tester trying to get Zs readings. The place was a call centrre for a computer related firm and as well as the normal supply it has a gert UPS in the plant room (p.resumably to keep the servers etc up and...

    schneider timer trouble

Just a grizzle really... one of our sites uses a couple of four channel timers to control contactors for the discharge lighting. They've been reliable for ages but one went up the spout last week. Got one of the lads to change it and he came back moaning a bucketful. Complained about how the new...

NoNoNo why do i always get them

And that's the problem. You couldn't sleep at night if you did anything wrong (me either come to that) but these muppets don't KNOW they've done anything wrong! They think they're doing Rolls Royce jobs...

Help wanted with em fittings please

Well gentlemen, the problem has gone away for now but without me finding the solution... In response to the voltage questions, the fittings that are faulting are on a circuit of 10 lights and only 2 or 3 are faulting - voltage is ok. The batteries in some of the fittings are brand new - the...

Help wanted with em fittings please

Yep, voltage is well within limits. I've seen this problem before over the years and never got to the bottom of it. Not too bad when there's only one or two but this is in the stairwell of a 30 storey building (68 fittings in all) and probably 25% of them are acting up. Makes you look a twonk...

Help wanted with em fittings please

calculating csa of earthing conductor with BS1361 fuse

So, to satisfy an old man's confusion, if the installation has a BS1361 fuse and it's now been turned into a BS88 type 3 by the magic of the BGB, do you use the info for BS88 fuses in the tables?

    FCU question

Or, use the existing spur to feed a multi-gang socket and plug everything into that. Always good to remember the regs are a deemed to comply document, not law. If you can justify running a ring main in wet string and bell-wire to a manslaughter jury, it's your choice. Just don't pick up the...

    Street Light Testing

Car parks tend to be a bit of a cross over area. If there's an enclosure with a DB and breakers I'd probably test the SWA's to column bottoms just for my own peace of mind. Nothing worse than putting a lovely set of new fittings up then having them fail within a week cos some hairy arse nicked a...

    Easy money.....but I just couldn't take it!

Kudos for a job well done! Beyond the call etc. I hope if my old dutch is ever in the same boat she gets someone like you who'll go the extra yard. As suggested before, a GWS card and a bunch of flowers - and the em light is something I hadn't thought of but sounds great. Then, if you're still...

    Street Light Testing

If it's a lamp change, no testing required (apart from checking they work :) ) If it's fittings, then our tame Niceic engineer asks us to disconnect at column bottom and check Zs from end column of each circuit and IR. Then treat each column as a separate DB and test from cut-out to lamphead...
