Hi,
I'm not an electrician, but a competent DIYer.
The obvious answer to my situation is to get an electrician in, and believe me I have tried. But everyone seems to be unavailable to help until the New Year, even for emergencies, so it looks like DIY is going to happen, or no Christmas. We...
Called out to rental property i carried out an EICR on in March; this year to look at loss of power.
Narrowed it down to the down stairs ring main, done end to ends and ring in tact, insulation resistance failed, dropped every socket and inspected the wiring and socket fronts which 2 i had to...
Hello. I am located in the Maryland, USA and have no real electrical experience. I just replaced my Nest video door bell with another non-subscription based brand. It went well, except that the original doorbell was tightly fit into a corner by the builder and I discovered that the new doorbell...
Hi, hopefully, you can help me by giving some guidance over the EICR which has failed for my rented property.
It was carried out by an electrician who is supplied via the managing agency.
The first contact I had was an email that stated the EICR had failed and some remedial work was required...
I am installing an external light to the side of my house. There is an existing light in place but the supply cable exits the house in the wrong place for the new light. So I am using 25mm plastic conduit and weatherproof plastic junction boxes to bring the supply to the correct place on the...
Hi guys,
My parents have just moved into a new build with an ideal S24 boiler.
They were complaining that the boiler was firing up randomly so I took a look.
I have completely re wired everything correctly (20 years experience, approved contractor) yet it still runs almost all the time.
It’s...

Hi. New to the forum. I hope I've chosen the correct category to place my post.
I tested a landlords property recently, turned out to be TNC. I haven't much experience encountering TNC systems. So I've signed up here to pick a few brains.
I'm filling out the report now and keep stumbling on...
I just picked up a Thermal Dynamics SL100 plasma cutter. I have 220 circuit in my shop but I don't think its up to the task. Its about a 40 foot run to the shop from my 200 amp panel. Currently the circuit has a two pole 15 amp breaker with 10-3 wire. The requirements are below. Can I just...

Any thoughts as to why a fused spur connected correctly would burn out and melt the unit? Surely if it is pulling too much current (which is possible as it was feeding a socket used for car charging) the 13amp fuse in the unit would have blown before it got too hot and melted.
Hi all!
I have a light fitting with 3 lights on it in a row. The middle one burnt out right away when I connected it.
Then I started another thread prior to this one which solved some wiring questions. It's now all connected ok. When I replaced the middle light after all of this was done and I...
I've just started out on my own coming into my 3rd month. The first month and half I was mega busy working 5 or 6 days every week and now I'm currently doing 2 or 3 jobs a week. My number has been passed on from clients I've worked for and I've spoken to a few builders and plumber I know. I've...
Hi!
I want to solder a TRS cable to a circuit amplifyer.
The amplifyer has +, - and OUT as outputs. I have heard that it should be possible to use a 3.5 mm TRS cable but I'm wondering to what output I should solder the wires from the TRS cable.
Someone told me that I should use either TIP or...
Howdy folks, new member here. Homeowner, been doing my own electric for 40 years or so, from swapping out plugs to installing an entire circuit panel. Ran into a problem a while back that I still can't figure out, I'm hoping it's something that someone out here has experience with.
A couple of...

I have just started paying into a private pension. I pay in £500 p/month, the government tops it up by £125, which relates to the tax.
Every year I fill out my tax return. I am self employed and am a sole trader, so the tax return is fairly straight forward. However, I always put 'zero' where...

Hello all,
I moved to China 6 years back for my wife’s work. Trades aren’t really a proper thing out here and there is nowhere to requalify and COVID has made it impossible to go home and re sit.
I was wondering if I were to try and get work in another country, say Middle East or Canada, could...
Hi, The heater over temp protection (bi-metal) switch on my Cleverspa has failed open circuit. If I link it out, the heater still works. As expected, the manufacturer hasn't replied. So, can anybody advise the type / part number if this part; or advise the temperature at which this over-temp...
