Came across a 2.5mm fp200 4 core cable used as part of a ring today, am I right in thinking this isn't an acceptable method as there will be only 1 earth wire in the cable ??
One of my domestic electrical customers has recently had a 4Kw solar PV system installed.
The area in the garage next to where the array was located does not have easy access to the main Consumer Unit so the installers have installed a 2-way garage consumer unit to connect the inverter. This 2...
In a new build , I have noticed how the Sparks that have wired the house (4 bed 3 storey town house)
They have put the kitchen appliances sockets/kitchen worktop sockets/boiler fcu/1st floor sockets/2nd floor sockets on a 32A ring and the ground floor sockets only 4 sockets on another 32A ring...
away to install a new ring circuit and lighting circuit to bedroom conversion but there will be minor works involved in pulling back existing circuits to there origin .the reason for new circuits is because i know there is a neutral to earth fault on existing ring circuit.i know this because...
I was to asked to add a spur on a ring circuit.
I done a continuity test to make sure i had a ring the N-N was 0.46 CPC-CPC was 1.08, But my L-L was 2.4, i went round every socket looking for a loose conection.
Tightened up a few loose sockets and the reading came down to 1.9 i coudlnt find any...
why do people use a ring circuit? i understand that the cable for example 2.5mm twin and earth can carry more current in theory another reason i can think of dont know if its why is the circuit may require a heavy use of socket outlets e.g an office using computers etc... but what other reasons...
Hi folks, I'm recently qualified so be nice...
I'm preparing a quote for the wiring of a dozen up and over garages which are in two rows of 6 and face each other with an 11m gap. One double socket per garage and fcu for a single 1500 fluorescent fitting. I was planning to wire them all as one...
Hi
I'm due to get my kitchen replaced and will be installing x2 2400w plinth heaters so will I require a seperate circuit or can I connect them to my ring circuit ?
how would you calculate the insulation resistance on domestic ring circuit when measuring with both live and neutral conductors connected together to the circuit protective conductor, is there any way of calculating the approximate value before using a insulation resistance instrument. cheers
Hi
There seems to be some confusion at work about ring circuit continuity on an EICR. I was under the understanding that you took r1 & r2 added together and divided by 4, then during the live testing a Max Zs was measured using meter. The method two or 'figure of eight' is used only on Initial...
Hi I've recently qualified as a electrician this year I was installing a new rcd consumer unit In a upstairs flat the other day as the old one had no rcd protection and on old rewireable fuses everything was going fine with my dead tests until I started testing the ring bear in mind there's only...
My ex partner has had a kitchen fitted on the cheap.. The guys ripped out existing wiring, fitted the kitchen minus any circuits.. The board is an old wylex 5 way, (which I have purchased plug in mcb's for)... I'm level 3 2330 trained but don't work in domestic electrics (automatic doors is my...

Hi All,
Im extending a ring circuit for a customer but he wants two switches for his washing machine and dishwasher, he doesnt want socket outlets showing on top of the work surface but just wants these two switches, is there an easier way of doing this but keeping the ring circuit.
Thanks
macu
I am installing two 2Kw convector heaters in a small flat. The obvious way would be to connect them to the ring, especially since they each have a 13A plug. However 4Kw sounds a lot to me on a ring. Its rather more than an immersion heater! but on the other hand no where near the 7.3Kw for...
Hi, ive had a phone from a disabled gentleman today, who explained to me that he had plugged his microwave into his kitchen socket and BANG! the lot went off.
He says that the only place that there seems to be a problem is the kitchen area. The lounge is still on and no power circuits are...
Completely electrically illiterate :gorgeous:: all power was switched off apart from the fridge/freezer and wine cooler when we went on holiday for a week came back Saturday turned on the power all went on except the 1 x MCB for the downstairs ring, which runs the front room and dining room...

Hi guys after advice
Large old manor hall wiring 30 yrs old. Tn-c-s Few faults rectified and board changed to 17th edition.
Downstairs orginally had a ring wired in steel conduit and singles. Using the conduit as a earth. Look like a door way was put on to make a extension to the house a few...
House built about 1974, wiring OK. But all are sockets on a shallow skirting so need to raise them all to about 450mm plus new skirting. Option 1 - pull wiring down below flooring and extend each wire to new sockets above skirting using 2 Ashley J803's thus maintaining ring. Option 2 - pull...
Hello chaps and chapettes,
Continuity of final ring circuit I measured:
L-L = 1.45
E-E = 0.8
but measuring N-N I got 108.8....???!!!!!!
Any ideas..? Or are those readings good in my limited experience and consequently I'm an idiot.
A out of date Cadbury's cream egg for the most sarcastic...
