I have been asked to pat test cash registers that are fitted with a non standard 13 amp plug and socket. The plug has a round earth pin with a flat top and standard L & N pins. To do the job I need a socket with extension that will accept the non standard plug. No supplier seems to stock the...
I've been offered a post (electrical improver) by the building site I've been doing work experience on. They take you on on a self employed basis,so you have to jump through the hoops and be grateful whilst not getting sick, holiday etc. This'd be my first proper paid job as a spark, am...
Hi all,
Have been given an opportunity to price for a new build housing development.

I want to introduce an IR heating system into an existing split load CU. It is supplied at the moment by 1 phase of a 3 phase input, controlled by a 60A main fuse and a 40A meter. The 5 existing circuits are 2 x 32A ring mains, 2 x 6A lighting and 1 x 16A water heater.
The total wattage for the...
Here goes - Post number 2. First one wasn't too bad (apart from a few jokes about Diversity being a dance act and Susan Boyle (anyway I won't go on)). I have a Metrel MI3000 Easi Plus MFT. The probes look GS38 compliant except they have no inline fuses in the body. GS38 says "should have...
Hi,
If I repair say a 12VDC SELV floating mains power supply in a metal class 1 box what tests should be applied after a repair. I am thinking earthbond 100mA or 25A and IR test L+N to E with output also connected to E. What voltage should be used for the IR tests LN to E 500V DC or 1.4kV AC...

Quick question guys.
Am I right in thinking that a normal household with oil central heating, so no storage heaters, would be better off on a standard electricity tariff as opposed to an economy 7 tariff.
Thanks in advance.
Steve.
Hi Guys,
The 17th edition gives you a table of circuit breakers and their maximum allowed Zs, however as the 17th edition does not cover "machinery", we have just started working with BS EN 60204-1 "Safety of machinery - Electrical equipment of machines - Part 1 General requirements", and this...
My local electrical shop was out of stock of 1.5mm 3 core flex but offered to sell me the normally more expensive low smoke or heat resistant alternative for the same price. I have bought some but it is a lot a thinner than any 1.5mm I have ever used in the past or see in other shops now, its...

Is the any reason why you shouldnt fit a two gang switch, one wired as standard (switched live with 2T&E), and the second switch looped with the L-N passing through the switch (neutral in a wago). This second circuit is to power 5a sockets.
Would it be preferable to take a permanent live into...
when carrying out a PIR before an address is rented out, there are always the issues of original wiring being sub standard for current regs. examples being earthing, special locations, RCD's smoke detectors to state just a few.i always make a point of upgrading the earthing, and do my best to...

All,
Just fitted a RCBO board to a house and need to replace the RCD below with an isolation switch. Its thought that the unit is about 35 years old and I'm hoping someone can tell if which type(s) of isolators will fit the enclosure.
Many thanks.
