Im going to be doing a consumer unit change. There is already 10mm boding to gas and water pipes. However the customer has has some renovation work done to the plumbing.

So it starts off copper and then goes to plastic and then goes back to copper. Am i right in thinking i need to take a seperate 10mm bond to each copper pipe?? or??

I think it's more a case of your blind faith, after all ....why bother to test right??

i always test bonding conductors, so i would not call it blind faith myself, i just dont see the need to bond every piece of pipe that has had its continuity altered by plastic fittings. copper pipes are often isolated sections effectively insulated by the use of plastic connections. there is no need to bond these sections.
please dont infer that i dont test or that i am some fly by night , you would'nt like me calling you out on issues i disagree with so dont do it to me. i have managed to offer my view without attempting to run you down, unlike you sir, even though i could because you are in fact wrong.

Unfortunately forums attract these episodes but at least each and everyone of us has access to the "Report Post" button which does in turn invite a Moderator to assess the situation ;)

It's unfortunate that work is scarce in some areas. If this was not the case then I'm sure there would be less "attacks" :p

I hope that the OP has sifted the good from the not so good and obtained the answer he required:cool:

This is a great forum with a great deal of knowledge :applause

Another reason why bonding to all bits of copper could be more dangerous, is that if the copper pipe was isolated from earth previously then that wouldn't provide an earth path for an electric shock situation, if you now earth the pipe its then provides an earth path and potential for shock - you then have to rely on your RCDs to protect you!

Did someone say they didn't trust RCDs?

I think in E54 defence he may be thinking as I would yes there may be large sections of plastic pipes in the water installation, but if the gas pipe that connects to the boiler is most likely copper, there may be copper water pipe also connected to the boiler and therfore you may get continuity back through the water installation by the boiler.

Personally I would do an IR test on any copper pipe with in the bathroom to check if it was an extraneous conductive part, as the guys have said if it exceeds 23k ohms then I would not fit supplementry bonding to it. Again if all 3 conditions are met in reg 701.415.2 are met supplementry bonding can also be omitted, even if the metal work is an ECP

As the cable itself has had the cpc cut off at both ends I would enter a C3 as it doesn't offer any protection within the cable if accidentally...
