Discuss 2 way switch in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

If i do this this way then use a third switch to feed the spots then this will give me control.

So i will have a per feed to my 3rd switch then this will work wont it !

like i said in the first place mate. if perm is in l1 at other switch then l1 is your perm ( so long as colours are same. i.e. its the same core of 3 core) just link off that to your switch for downlights. people are leading you astray with all this run new cable ..... you've run the cable already. just a matter of connecting it up right.

How is he going to turn the spots on and off? The current switches are powering another light, we have 2 way switching for which all the strappers are currently being used. Where are we getting our neutral from, for example? I don't see how this can be done with just the existing cable, but maybe I'm reading it wrong.

The only way to do it without running any cables is to have all spots and other light on and off at the same time. They can't be seperated.

Yeh see ya point chaps.

I need a perm feed from the 2nd Switch and as it stands it dont have 1 (i thinki) so my plan is to find a perm feed and N and E from the lighting radial in the house or have them all on at the same time.

Blinking bad one this !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can you do this
If youl have a permanent feed and switched feed at switch 1 along with a 3-core
And a 3-core at switch 2

If you can get a permanent feed to switch 2 where the 3 core is on its own
Loop that new feed to either side of that now 2 gang switch

Use 2 cores for strappers and the other spare for the spots switched return

At switch 1(where there is a 2-core +3 core)two strappers to L1+L2 and the main lights switch return to common
Connector block the spare core from the strappers to the original feed
Change feed at rose to a switched feed for the spots

GET AN EELCTRICIAN ffs if you are training then getting a qualified person in to help will give you good training but ****ing about with things as you appeare to be doing may result in injury to yourself or others

Perhaps This drawing may help.

Dont forget though that the neutral needs to be taken from the same supply as the Live. So if the ligths are fed from the upstairs lighting this is where the neutral needs to come from.

As telepath has already said make sure the neutrals at both lights are off the same circuit (i.e. NOT borrowed) or you could end up with RCD tripping issues.

barx has explained this twice and you now have 2 diagrams.

With it being a 3 core, you're in luck. There will be a perm feed there. At the other switch (if its a single switch) there should be a twin and t'other end of said 3 core. now there are a couple of ways it could be in the back of this switch. Chances are there will be 1 core of 3core in Common, Another core AND perm feed (brown or red fom twin) in either l1 or l2 and then last core and switch wire (blue or black of twin) in other terminal. Now, what you need to do is see which core of 3core the perm feed is in with (this will be your perm feed at other end). Now in your new 2 gang switch, do first switch as it was in old 1 then put a link in between afore mentioned perm feed and the common of the second (downlight) switch, then simply pop your switch wire for downlights in the l1.

screw back, juice up and cross your fingers ;)

like i said in the first place mate. if perm is in l1 at other switch then l1 is your perm ( so long as colours are same. i.e. its the same core of 3 core) just link off that to your switch for downlights. people are leading you astray with all this run new cable ..... you've run the cable already. just a matter of connecting it up right.

You should be able to figure it out from that.
