So Im a little confused with the whole 230/240 volt situation. And need someone to simplify this for me.

What is the relationship between the two. why did the uk change to say they run a 230 volt/50hz +10%/-6% system when in actual fact they still supply at 240 volts.

was this just a standardization issue?

when filling out information and my meter reads a certain voltage, do i enter the reading as my result.... or 230?

should i erase all memory of 240 volts and how much of a difference does this make.

sorry if it all sounds cryptic, but hope someone can help unravel my brain. (literally :D)

Yes, erase all memory of 240 and 415 Volts!

You record 400/230 as nominal voltage on all documentation.

The EU decided, in its wisdom, to harmonise the UK standard mains voltage of 240v AC and the European standard of 220v AC, at 230v AC. Fine in theory but the cost of replacing supply equipment to deliver 230v was astronomic (there being no advantage whatever in changing, other than ‘harmonisation’). So to avoid accusations of failure to harmonise, they simply fiddled with the voltage tolerances, nothing actually changed!.

EU clap trap me thinks.

same with everything. meddling, useless, dickless, pencil necks dictating cable colours, voltages, metric system, human rights ( for criminals, perverts, minorities, but not for us ), we beat napoleon and hitler. now it's time to kick --- on the new dictators. GET US OUT OF EUROPE, CAMERON.

end of rant.........

So are you in favour of the Harmonised Document then? I can't really tell from your fence-sitting post! ;)

Lol, thanks for clearing that up guys, I was confused with the actual reading i was getting and the nominal voltage, plus speaking to people who still refer to it as 240 volts doesnt help.

Agree with the EU comments, makes it hard for the working man.

IMO the only things that want harmonising ( or liquidising ) are bureaucrats goolies.

Surely if they dropped the voltage by 10 volts it would reduce peak energy consumption. That's the theory behind those energy saving devices I read about on here.

Tel, I'm sure the Europeans speak equally highly of you. :)

Think he's of the Xmas card list !!!!

Yes but what about all those that are near the limit on volt drop?

i remember that froggy president de gaulle saying NON to britain in the common market. they don't want us, we don't want them. it's all a big scam to give cushy pension linked jobs at huge salaries to failed politicians that could not make minimum wage in the real world.
