I am about to take the 2382-12 exam, which I have studied for through electacourse.
Today I had a look at applying for an ECS card, and there are several requirements that you must have, but 2382-12 is not one of them. and as far as I can tell, having a 2382 qualification does not entitle you to an ECS card. which has made me think do I also need to do the 2330, or something similar.

unfortunately course providers should let you know what your doing before taking your cash.

the 2382 is simply a guidence to our working rules/regs, you would need to be looking at a domestic installer course or better still the proper 2330/nvq/2391 route.

your 2382 has not been a waste of time it is still a required qualification you just need to add a few more to it.

bit pointless learning how to look up a disconnection time if you dont know what its for.

I would save your cash there are too many sparks both properly qual'd and people that have done short courses competing for what work there is around for some very low rates of pay.

I would get into another field with a better reward vs outlay one which has not been undermined by the Part P attempt at some quality control in the industry.

If you do it properly you will be very very luck to get a company to take you on as a proper apprentice for 5 years with several years day release and on the job NVQ etc but there are not that many places at all.

If you do it off your own back properly i.e. get quals like the 3 years for a 2330 L3 (~ÂŁ3000), plus an NVQ (~ÂŁ1500) then you may be lucky to get technical assessors to verify your jobs before the NVQ runs out you can then do something like the 2391 (ÂŁ600 if you pass it first time 40% rate) even then you will not be Jib rated so will have to be a self employed sparky.

Or you could do a short course but have no real experience and no real grounding (anything upto ÂŁ8000 for 8 weeks training).

why wouldnt he, if he gets the quals you mention then hes met jib requirements?

Maybe I am wrong and I apologize if I am, but I thought you then needed a company recommendation if you did that route, and being self employed that would be hard, what I wanted to point out that that is a hell of a lot of cash, time and responsibility when you consider the rates of pay, so he should be really thinking before he heads down that path....

Hi, i have a couple of friends that have done the 2382 as part of a short course. They both said it was a good start to get them into the industry and it helped them to understand properly the prosesses of inspection & testing. But like ezzz said there's no point knowing disconnection times if you don't know what there for, i suppose it depends what you want to do and what your goal is.

Don't be put of by what you read on the internet cos alot of people just try to put you off because they're greedy and they want all the work for themselves. Both of my friends earn a decent living as domestic installers now

Electrical Trainee wonders you mean .... oh my god!!

well i would say that the 2382 is a fair start.....as long as its recognised as just that.....a start. The common path here would have been the 2330....then the 2382, 2391 etc....but sometimes these short courses can be a help.....say you have the 2382...and you then decide to go to college for the 2330...well it would be the 2357 now....but say you had the 2382 first....could be helpful for college as you will already have a start......thats what i have found anyway......

I`m sorry Jimmy but the 2382 wont "help them to understand inspection and testing" mate.....2392...or the 2391 for that mate.....

Totally agree Glen, as long as you keep your feet on the ground and don't start trying to write the '18th edition wiring regs' then it's a kind of gateway into an industry which is extremely difficult to get into
