No you wont find it in our VAGUE regs:D

Sorry what i should have said is the grey is acepted as neutral among sparks;)most sparks i know use the grey for N some sleeve it blue others dont bother,at the end of the day if a grey wire goes into a terminal marked N and has a blue coming out the other side it doesnt take much working out does it,and to be honest anyone who cant fathem out which wire is N then they have no business messing:D
What happens in a Distribution board, surely you would presume that grey is live, as it is a phase(line) conductor? Would you sleeve it in the D/board, but not at the other end?
Grey should ALWAYS be sleeved blue, if it is used as a neutral. The grey:rolleyes: area for me is, do you sleeve a grey cable brown, if it is used as a live, i.e in an emergency fitting where grey is perhaps the emergency feed?
IIRC, we used to sleeve blue and yellow cores red (for instance a 3 core cable used for 2 way switching), so should we always sleeve black and grey?

Electricians of advanced years never made presumptions,they grow old verifying :)

Lol, true enough, but I think if the a clerk of works inspected one of my Dboard or accesories and asked why I hadnt sleeved anything, I might struggle with your argument a little.

Mr Mark Sparks.,

Thanks for that photo to clear up couple issue with UK cables and of course we get some mess in France and In USA as well if you are instering with USA colours let me list it here but leave the tea cup on the table for a moment until you get done reading

120-240 or 120-208 volt monophase { single phase }

Black - Line
Red - Line
White - Netrual
Green - Earth

208Y120 volt triphase supply

Black - Phase 1
Red - Phase 2
Bleu - Phase 3
White - Netrual
Green - Earth

240 Volt delta triphase supply ( three conductor supply }

Black - Phase 1
Red - Phase 2
Bleu - Phase 3
Green- Earth

240D120 Volt delta triphase supply ( four conductor supply )

Black - Phase 1
Orange - Phase 2
Bleu - Phase 3
White - Netrual
Green- Earth
Note : Orange aka wild leg, crazy phase , B******* phase etc on Phase 2 to Netrual the voltage will be 208 volts so anything is wired for 120 volts will simpley make a smoke show no question asked.

480Y277 volt supply
Brown - Phase 1
Orange - Phase 2
Yellow - Phase 3
Grey - Netrual
Green - Earth

Note : some state or local codes may want phase 2 to be on purple instead of orange due the delta format as above

240 or 480 Corner grounded Delta system { this kinda a eye opener when you do the testing }

Black Phase 1
White Phase 2
Red Phase 3

The fastest give away when you do the testing with voltmeter from phase 1 or 3 it will read 240 or 480 volts from phase to earth.

I will write a French colour verison later if you request including the old set up.

Merci,Marc

As all three colours are technically a phase/Live colour as long as you sleeve at both ends which you've used for which I don't see it really matters. I've always been taught to use brown as live, Black with blue sleeve as Neutral and Grey with brown sleeve as interlink. This gives some earthed seperation between the interlink and the other conductors too.

I blame europe.Everything is changing to suit them on the continent,we'll be driving on the right if they had their way.:eek:

Indeed, it was seriously considered in the 1960's that Britain began to drive on the right, however, the conservative powers did everything they could to nip it in the bud. and the billions it would cost also stopped it from happening. Driving on the left stems back to the days when gents rode around on horseback carrying a sword. The majority of people are Right handed and so it was easier to attack an oncomer if you stuck to the left hand side of the road/track.

..... did you know, Sweeden drove on the Left hand side until 3rd September 1967 when they changed to the right.

Sorry, I digress.
