Hi there,

just wondering what the average pay is for a 3rd and final year apprentice, I have level 2, started level 3 with my 301 and my site diary nearly completed. I'm coming up to my final year and just want to get an idea of what sort of money I should be expecting. I've looked on the JIB site and it has stage 1, 2, 3, 4 but I have no idea how this is relevant as most apprenticeships are lasting 3 years arent they?

Cheers,

John

P.s. Sorry I noticed I spelt apprentice wrong.

I think self employed is the way forward these days. Salaried jobs/apprenticeships are in so high demand you get paid less than a shelfstacker, sometimes for years. If you have the right contacts and attitude, go self employed and get a van and all yer tools and hire yourself out as a mate to whoever needs one, you can demand a decent wage. You may not work full time but gotta be better than working for peanuts.

I only decided to become an electrician (age 20) when I realised I DID have all the right contacts. I was already in yr1 of 2330 but this was more on my dads advice (I was working for his hire company doing portable appliance testing/maintenance at the time and had no intention of becoming a spark). I then got to know 2 guys (same age) who had started electrical apprenticeships straight from school and now appeared to be making a killing self employed and wanted a casual mate from time to time.

Since leaving (gradually) my dads firm that year I've always been self employed even during training when I was working for a few different sparks on a casual basis but pretty much full time and once I had a years experience I'd never take less than £100 a day. Mind you this was just before the recession got its teeth in, but the building trade round my area wasn't hit too bad by the credit crunch. Most self employed electricians I know are (relatively) minted.

ill be on about a tenner an hour in my 3rd year :) not as much as some, not as little as others.

I dont think people should get annoyed about their training wage, the most important thing is just to get qualified then you can start dictating wages as appropriate to your skill and ambition.
