4 Way C/U change...price? type?

Dave 85

Had a guy just ring up saying his old fuse board is melting. Its only 4 way, small house I guess, he's actually already sold the house so not particularly keen on shelling out ££££££'s on an upgrade but I said its the only option.
I'm inclined to go with an RCBO board, just wondered what kinda price I should charge him. I usually use a split load 10 way and charge £350
but seems pointless on 4 circs. The thing is, I reckon a decent 5/6 way RCBO board with 4 breakers (I prefer the wylex metal clads, they are taller) will set me back more than a 10 way split load. Cant get a price today obviously, its sunday. Any ideas what I should charge? I've said approx £280 but think maybe a bit more....

Ok guys, well, all sorted.
Got him to send me a photo this morning from which I ascertained there was 6 or 7 circuits (there were 7), probably main bonding (water 6mm gas 10mm), and plenty of space in the cupboard. I told him £310 because of the extra circuits, bit cheap still but only took 4 hours, testing and all so easy money. Upgraded main tails and earth, I carry plenty of spare MCB's incase I need extras/different size. I wanted to keep the guy sweet because his dad is owns a firm that builds luxury holiday cabins and is starting to put some my way. Hes happy, Im happy and I only had to drive over there once.

Yes Dave great job. I've nicked one of photos for my earthing arrangements thread, hope you don't mind? It's a very good example of a job well done.

So the customer on the phone didn't give you all the correct info over the phone (theres a surprise :)), and its good that you only had to do one trip. Also I think the price is spot on.

Your pic is on this thread Dave if your wondering what I'm on about. http://www.electriciansforums.net/e...4-earthing-arrangements-explained-photos.html

Well I wouldn't say he was withholding information, he just said it was a 4 way board. Cheers for reminding me that a 4 way board doesn't always mean 4 circuits guys, I'da felt a bit of a plonker turning up with a 4 way RCBO board that I just spent £150 on to find what I actually need was a £60 10 way split load....

Going by pic 1 it was a lose connection or was it more than that?

Hard to say, the thing was fried, no probs on the circuit though and fuse hadnt popped.. Client tells me a surveyor went in there to inspect it and within 12 hours his garage circuit had burnt out. He reckons the surveyor must have 'knocked it'. He's trying to get them to pay for it I think.

He could always use 2 x 2 way garage boards, their only twenty quid each. Might look a bit daft next to each other in the cupboard under the stairs :).

Moot point now but if you fit 2 boards you'd then have to fit an enclosure with a standalone main switch for the installation to comply with regs. That coupled with 2 Henly blocks (or 1 twin block) would bump the price up a bit.

I've always wondered how off peak systems comply with the one main switch reg.......
