Hi All

Revising for my up and coming AM2 exam. I have been using the sparky facts site as my kind of bible. When I have been flicking through this forum though some people have commented that there are plenty of errors on the sparky facts website. Has anybody else heard this & if so what are the errors.

Also know its a long shot but…..

any one know anywhere I can get my hand on (or at least view) a copy of the job description they give out when you begin the AM2?

any help much appreciated !

thanks

Cos they said use the armour as a cpc and then it's L,N,E meaning I have a core spare. Just found this little picture I nicked off a you tube clip. He's used a core here as a cpc so guess I'm gonna have to chance it and do that. Think I might secure the db end to the Banjo etc rather than straight to the earth bar. Unless anyone knows any differently of course????

Should still earth the armouring even if using a core for cpc in cable

If it is a three phase socket then there would be L1, L2, L3, N for the four cores and the armour used as the earth.
If it is a single phase application then you would as you say have L, N, E, in this case you would have an extra core unused; this is an unusual arrangement for a test, but if you did have a spare core then you could use that as another parallel E (appropriately sleeved and teminated).
The cpc cores should be taken to the earthing bar and not to the banjo as otherwise this introduces another joint in the cpc.
Obviously you would earth the armour as well from the banjo / piranha nut with a fly lead to the earth bar.

Yes sorry you are right. I should have said that all 3 inputs from the db (l1,l2,l3) to the isolator are lives - brown, black, grey (and will need identifying as lives by tape around them).

Take it then from the isolator to the actual socket the same arrangement exists and I have to identify these by tape too?

So I'm wrong then aren't i? It is defo a 3 phase industrial socket & so this 4th core needs to go to neutral in the isolator and not used as a cpc after all.

(I do go the long way around the house in getting all my answers !! Apologies!!!!!)

Sounds very likely, there are a number of possible alternatives for wiring three phase equipment but this maybe considered a basic standard for a socket.
Remember that brown, black and grey are the phase colours so do not need further identification, if you have those coloured cores.
If they are white numbered cores then they would need identification and sleeving is better than tape.

You can get 4 pin and 5 pin 3 phase sockets/plugs.

Also you don't need to put brown tape on the other 2 phases as these are the phase colours anyway.

It would be different if you were using a 3 core in say 2 way lighting on single phase supply. Then the cores would need brown sleeving.

Edit..... Beaten to it
