Another question?

Hi guys, A customer of mine wants me to organise for him to be able to (when he has a power cut) start his manual generator in his basement so he can run some essentials during outage. He wants it to be all manually done and kept as simple as possible. Never done this before but I would expect some sort of change over switch and surely protection....I dunno, can anyone give me some pointers. Cheers

Phase failure relay (when power is off) it instigates a supply to the starting circuit, genny starts, reaches optimum voltage and frequency eg 230v@50hz, C/O switch operates feeding protected loads. the C/O lswitch should have some sort of load shedding capability to ensure non esential loads are not supplied, as benji says fume extraction is a must

Is this an existing generator your client has?? There is a good bit more that needs to be sorted out before you go connecting this generator to supply house circuits. First and foremost, is that most small generators on the market are NOT suitable to supply household appliances/equipment that are electronic in nature or has electronic controls. As stated there are many threads covering this subject on here so go search them out. I hope this basement/cellar has good through ventilation and a means of getting shot of the exhaust fumes.... lol!!

Ask him if he has informed his insurance company, of his intentions to locate a stand-by Genny in the basement along with the fuel to run the thing!! lol!!

He has asked me to keep it all manual at this stage. What I need to know: is a manual changeover switch all I need between jennie and cu supply. There must be more to it than this. Then if its a manual change over the client would manually switch it back. There will be a clean break between them both eg. Mains selection, OFF, Generator selection.

Your right there is a bit more too it, its all in the design. Generator, change-over and installation of them.
