B

bugsy

Quoted a CU change ( to include full test before change ) quoted £ 500.00 got told by client it should be £ 150.00 when I asked how he came to this figure he produced and ad by B & Q , 10 way dual RCD board £50.00
I told him to go and get it and ask for one of ' how to do' fact sheets

best way is to remind them that they are not established recognised brands and may be obsolete in 5yrs thus cant get mcb's to fit if you want other electrical work done, and they only way to then add additional circuits maybe to change the board.
same happens with "recognised" brands MEM SqD ect squareD QOE RCBO £130 + gov cut MEM 1 mcb £65 MEN2 RCBO £80 hence I try n stick to Merlin

I was standing close to one the other day n was sorley tempted to jump in but hey if they wanna trust OAP DIY guys then so be it more work for the small electricians to sort out the DIY Bozzups

Just ask the customer how much B&Q can do a fluke or megger mft, PL insurance, annual part P rregistration etc for.

I never justify or explain my prices to customers, I just give them the price and work description.

You could really argue this on a consumer unit change as essentially your saying in 99% of cases that the kitchen needs its own rcbo as that's where the freezer plugs in and that the house ring needs the same as that's what the alarm comes off. When the house is only 6 circuits a 3+3 split is fine.

The split duel RCD boards are fully 17th compliant

Correct me if I am wrong?
Not saying your incorrect but kitchen 'if you can goes on an rcd' and you run a dedicated radial for fridge/freezer on rcbo, as the kitchen has more items that are likely to trip an rcd, also security alarm shouldn't be prone to nuisance tripping, the heating as well should be seperate too if you consider an elderly lady in mid winter dosn't want to lose her heating because of a random fault she can't sort herself.
My post wasn't saying the boards don't comply but it was explaining the cost is greatly undervalued if you have the option of fitting the above dedicated circuit, oh and garage is another one on the list too.
What im saying is the argument that you can put across if you get a customer who starts throwing the B&Q senerio in your face.

B&Q are using a play on words .... yes the boards comply and are 17th edition but in reality you would need to triple the price if you want to fit to a house with a 17th edition circuit design.

Ah yes I agree with what your saying but my point was that this isn't a point you could use against a customer as by the regulations the board does comply. Also I didn't imaging that the customer would need a new board should he have a 17th edition designed system.

Trying to advise these seperate circuit designs to people that want a cu change for £150 is falling well and truly on deaf ears

Yes you have a good point but i do usually tend to find at least one circuit that can be rcbo'd whether the garage, alarm or boiler off a converted immersion supply, its getting less common to see houses that don't need a rewire that couldn't have a 17th fitted and have one of the above on an rcbo.... and this was my point an extra £35 straight away and the magic £50 has disappeared.

depends on manufacturer I can get BG 10 way 2 rcd fully loaded for £50.00 but dont use them , Crabtree 13 way £95.00, MK 10 way £85.00
same for Square D, Hager etc

well, i try and buy the B&G from the orange shed on a wednesday. they're £45 then. (old fart's discount)

The point is that the price of the board is nominal in the full costings of the job, this is what the customer needs to understand. Anyone can probably get a cheap board for 50 and then get a mate who is good with electrics to bang it in for 100.

I can buy brake lines for my car from halfords and get a mate who has dabbled with cars to install them..... I wouldn't tho!

Tel as I mentioned before,I fitted one of these

It seems to me the installer is stuck with whatever mcbs are in the board, I wanted a 20 amp which wasn't included and the customer reckoned there were no loose ones available,my own suppliers dont hold them either

Do B+Q cater for various ranges?
