Quoted a CU change ( to include full test before change ) quoted £ 500.00 got told by client it should be £ 150.00 when I asked how he came to this figure he produced and ad by B & Q , 10 way dual RCD board £50.00
I told him to go and get it and ask for one of ' how to do' fact sheets

Tell him to supply all materials and you will do it on a day rate for him. Then if there is a problem or any other such fault charge him for call backs. Also charge extra if any of the bits are wrong and you need to go and swap then etc etc.

Or if he wants to play the "I want it at B&Q prices" then do this.

Charge him B&Q price for the tails
Charge him B&Q price for the bonding
Charge him the LABC price for notifying
Then charge him per hour at £15 (bloke in pub rate)

Then see if it works out cheaper for him

Good answer

best way is to remind them that they are not established recognised brands and may be obsolete in 5yrs thus cant get mcb's to fit if you want other electrical work done, and they only way to then add additional circuits maybe to change the board.

in this b&q kit do you get rcbo's included, if you cant fit them i would argue they dont comply to 17th edition as i would say the Freezer and burgular alarm should be isolated from the main RCD's and also the boiler could be argued to fall into this catagory, so you should be able to explain the cost of 3 rcbo will easily double if not triple their package offer.

they're a 3 Neutral Bar board. highly flexible. you can fit RCBOs or have some non-RCD ways. only possible drawback is the RCBOs may be a bit tight due to the internal tails, but it's perfectly do-able.

how much are they selling rcbo's for then as its the 50quid all in that attracts joe public but they dont express to meet 17th you may need rcbo's fitted so the magic offer soon disappears then tails etc and they wonder why our reasonable quotes are made to look like a rip off.

When ever people thros the "advertised price of a CU I've seen at me" I say - yes that's all well and good, but its not a make I install, nor keep spares for, nor can guarantee that it'll be available next year!

Generally people then get the idea - if they don't I simply quote them my "normal" price by email and rarely get the business.

i don't think b&q do the RCBOs but i have a wholesaler thast stocks the CUs , MCBs and RCBOs. the manufacturers are in Telford.

Say you use B&Q then tell them you'll match it but you also need to fit 3 x rcbo's to comply to 17th which are not included with board, so thats £100 quid on top, then full test report and write-up plus fitting say £150 nd £100 respectively. Thats £400 the same as original quote then tell them DNO will bill them £200 for isolation and re-seal.

That £50 MAGIC offer isnt really what it says on the tin anymore.

You could really argue this on a consumer unit change as essentially your saying in 99% of cases that the kitchen needs its own rcbo as that's where the freezer plugs in and that the house ring needs the same as that's what the alarm comes off. When the house is only 6 circuits a 3+3 split is fine.

The split duel RCD boards are fully 17th compliant

Correct me if I am wrong?
