Hi chaps,

I've decided to go ahead and seek out the HNC, with intention to get the HND (and later, the masters). problem is that I, and no-one affiliated with the two colleges I work with, no anywhere local to me that delivers this course. The nearest seems to be oxford, which is a bit too far for me to travel and study.
I've considered studying from home, I've experience doing electronics and social studies this way, but I know nothing about the colleges offering this alternative for this course.

I'd like to know if anybody else has chosen this method?
How did it go?
What modules did they include?

Is there somewhere in Berkshire or surrey that delivers the HNC?

Sorry to dredge up an old thread but I didn't want to start another one on the same topic.

Basically I had to abandon the one day a week in college course as I'm just too busy so I'm now looking at the distance learning HNC with COLU.

Just wondering if anyone is currently doing or thinking of embarking on the same course so we could share idea's and info etc etc.

Also if anyone has done the above and has any relevant info......good books or publications they found useful etc I'd be much obliged.

Many thanks.

One of the must have books used to be "The Art of Electronics" by Horowitz and Hill. Don't know if it still is, I'm going back a "couple" of years.

'Higher Engineering' by Tooley & Dingle, covers all core modules and is excellent, if you like i can send you pdf 'Engineering Mathmatics' by John Bird, also excellent

I got hold of this little fella today.....initial thoughts are.....bloody hell!!!

Just cant seem to set my mind on the HNC I want to follow.

I used to be very indecisive, but now I'm not so sure!!

"Hughes Electrical and Electronic Technology" was and probably still is the bible for up-to and including HND. I used it 25 years ago and its now in its 10th edition. Its not cheap though (Amazon have it for £42.10!)

Well, after much ummming & ahhhing I've finally applied to Tesside Uni to study Electrical & Electronic Engineering via distance learning.

I wasted so much time trying to decide which direction to go in and how to go about it that in the end I was loosing sleep over it.

So I thought sod it and filled in the online application last night.

I fully expect to have to do the maths bridgeing course as I was a bit of a tearaway as a teenager and hated school with a passion (when I was there:evil:). I did achieve C and above in all my GCSE's though, much to the dissapointment of all my teachers as they had me down for a total waster!!!!

So, all you industrial maintenance specialists have a new padouin.:17:

Cheers.

I just need a new challenge:donatello:.

General installation is becoming a bit tedious TBH, I need something to stretch the old grey matter a bit while there is still enough of it left to be stretched.:earmuffs:

I know the feeling Lenny, I have always fancied a PhD, I have even discussed it with a Uni Prof!
I have a subject area and everything, just not the time, money or permission off the Mrs!
I'm actually thinking about a course now, but can't decide what!
NEBOSH Construction or Fire is a possibility!
Or possibly, I'll look at the ventilation side of things as I already do COSHH testing of LEV.
Maybe BREEM assessing or something!...

See I said I could not decide!

Well, just got home to a letter from Teesside Uni &.......I'm in!!!!, they've accepted my application.:20:

As I thought, I'm required to do the maths bridging module as I don't have the A levels etc, but I was prepared for that anyway.

Can't wait to get started now, really chomping at the bit. I may start a thread on my progress as I go along, just to give others an insight into whats involved with distance learning & an HNC etc.

Woohoo!!!!:bulb2:

if you had the time Paul have youlooked into getting it funded through the uni? some will fund whilst having you teach a couple of classes and some will fund it through the research funds. also there are some good funding to be tapped into through local areas and grants people don`t even know are there. I think it is called fundafinder if anyone is looking at going into higher ed or even fe, the library can get you access to the site.

nice one, how long is the course?

Learners are permitted a maximum of 5 years to complete the course. General consensus is 2 years so that's what I'm aiming for as a maximum.

One chap that went through the same course apparently completed it in 10 months!!!!, obviously he wasn't a working chap at the time.

At the end of the day it will take me as long as it takes, I wont be rushing the modules for the sake of it to get them finished, I'll make sure I'm happy & fully understand everything before anything is submitted.

It'll be a marathon not a sprint IMO.
