Back to original thread, we musn't of course forget that Centrica owns (or part owns), so it must of course pay itself enough to make a profit..

Renewables

We operate four onshore and offshore wind farms, including:

  • the 194MW Lynn and Inner Dowsing wind farm development, and
  • the 90MW Barrow offshore wind farm.
In October 2009 we announced that the 270MW Lincs offshore wind development project had received final investment approval and construction began in 2010. And, in January 2010, we were awarded exclusive rights to develop up to 4.2GW in the Irish Sea zone in The Crown Estate's Round 3 offshore wind tendering process.

Gas fired power stations

We operate a fleet of seven CCGT power stations across the UK. The latest, completed in 2010, is at Langage in Devon. It is one of the most efficient generators of its type in the world and can output up to 885MW.

Nuclear power stations

In November 2009 we completed a deal with EDF to acquire a 20% equity interest in British Energy, the operator of eight existing nuclear power stations in the UK. This was in part funded by the sale of Centrica's 51% equity stake in the Belgian business SPE to EDF. This joint venture with EDF also provides us with the option to participate in EDF's UK New Nuclear Build (NNB) programme.

One of the good things that appears to be happening is calls for greater competition as these big megopolies expand

Next to go: Scottish Power...

[h=4]BREAKING NEWS:[/h]
Scottish Power says it will raise prices for gas and electricity by an average 7% in December

What makes me laugh is that if you are on a prepayment meter you don,t get the discounts that you get if you have a credit meter, strange when you consider a customer on prepayment has paid before he uses it yet on a credit meter you could run up a big bill and then say you can,t afford to pay it.

The people they hit the hardest are the ones they know have the least power.
Many people on prepayment meters are heavily in debt and unable to change suppliers, so they charge them more, to boost profits.
A form of silent insidious energy slavery.

Some good answers in this thread, but it boils down to this. Gas is tied to the price of oil, all the easy and cheap oil has been pumped, these days it costs $60-$80 to produce a barrel of oil, add to this the fact Saudi Arabians need $80 a barrel to fund their government expenditure means oil is not going drop and neither is gas.

That used to be true, but isn't really any more.
