That is the US gas market, totally separate from the rest of the world.

Just ask the Russians or Qataris to supply you some LNG at that price, they'll laugh themselves silly.

Europe Natural Gas Import Price
the point still stands.

compare it with brent crude, and in the last year brent crude had a spike in the spring of around 15%, then dropped 30% or so in the summer before rising again to just above the start point for the year. Gas has remained relatively flat all year, with the biggest peak to trough variation being around 7-8%.

Gas futures contract. Prices are set for the contract period therefore it would be difficult to see a direct correlation to brent.

Case search

The Commission is investigating three suspected anti-competitive practices in Central and Eastern Europe. First, Gazprom may have divided gas markets by hindering the free flow of gas across Member States. Second, Gazprom may have prevented the diversification of supply of gas. Finally, Gazprom may have imposed unfair prices on its customers by linking the price of gas to oil prices.

That looks like you're agreeing that gas prices aren't actually particularly linked to oil prices any more?

In the past gas and oil prices were both almost entirely set by the market and regulation of supply to keep prices of both relatively steady outside of the odd price shock event.

This isn't the case any more, where the supply of oil is operating very close to the extremes of the production capacity, so any increase in demand or reduction in supply can cause serious price spikes (hugely exacerbated by speculators).

Gas isn't so close to it, but there are several bottlenecks in the system that can cause temporary price spikes, and generally more costly delivery methods are increasingly being needed to get the gas to market.

So the prices of the 2 are decoupling.

My point stands ;) Seems your agreeing that prices are / were linked.

Anyhow, I think we've both made good points and can agree that renewables rather than fossils are the best way forward.

I never said they weren't linked in the past - there's no argument about them having been well linked together historically (for the last few decades at least), I was just pointing out that IMO that is no longer the case, and probably never will be the case again for the reasons I've given.

indeed

We got a letter to the house a few weeks ago detailing the new tariffs and prices, and our projected bill for next year was est. at ÂŁ30k...haha. If theres not something wrong there then Im going to new to be working about 10 jobs!

My meter's going backwards - I have told them - and my new meter reading gave me a usage of 99994 units! When I called them they said my current bill was for ÂŁ15 000 or somesuch.
