dear green place
I've got a trip to BG assessment centre next week. Anybody done rhe tests and willing to tell a fellow what to expect?

I know a pipe monkey who works for BG, he has a set number of jobs to do every day. Geordie, you're a gas gadgie, how many boiler services could you do in a day? Assuming doing them all properly.

Oh, I forgot, they have their own safe isolation procedure. Takes about 15 minutes.

RE : BRITISH GAS ELECTRICIAN, . . Hmmmm! am I a sore loser?
I have just completed the British Gas "Sparky" test, at the Thatcham Academy (05/06/13) I was told that 8 questions are a 'MUST' get right, or instant FAIL!, (I GOT THOSE RIGHT) with an 80% or above pass rate required. ( I had already passed the phone call technical questions)
The (exam) was 30 multiple choice, technical questions, lasting 45 mins, with an "open book" policy.
I was was told that as I had got 4 questions wrong, below 80% I had NOT met the expected level of technical electrical knowledge required for the position.! ! ! O.K. fair enough! . . .
No problem, I don't know it all and NEVER will. My gripe/point however IS that the position I went for was for a DOMESTIC/RESIDENTIAL! electrician.
. . .the questions that I FAILED on was, eg. Highways, portable appliances, DC voltages, and one other that I have NEVER even heard of, and could not find in my O.S.G.?
Instead of thanking me for my time and efforts, and that the process has now ended, they continued to interview me, with a prolonged ethos of customer care. (another 1+ hours)
I was left thinking that despite the failed 'technical' test, that I had done VERY WELL, and would be notified within 2 weeks/14 days, as to the outcome of the interview.
Surprise, surprise, the VERY next morning 06/06/13 I had to listen to a BIG LOAD of SPILL, of how well I had done, but another candidate had 'Blown them away' with his technical expertise! and that it was NOT good news for me :-(
This is NOT the first time that I have not been unsuccessful in getting a job, and it will not be the last, but something here with these Monkey's has got my ALARM bells ringing.
In conclusion, if you get offered an interview for BG, don't be surprised if you are not up to required standard , or if the position EVER really existed ? ? ?

Too long didn't read.

Oh dear.

I'm sorry to hear that.

Never mind. If at first you don't succeed don't take-up skydiving as a hobby.

We had a gas safe plumber come down to a block of flats that we do maintenance on the other day. He was there to check the Gas and give certs etc. He condemned every property as there was no bonding under the boilers!!! I politely told him that this was not needed and had it been needed we would have done it ages ago. he replied that he had spoken to Gas Safe themselves and they assured him that it was absolutely necessary! So I would politely go along to the BG course, fill yourself with the free sarnies, have a jolly good time and then go home in the knowledge that you haven't learnt a thing about electrics.

So the questions you failed on, then, would be in the 17th edition Big Green Book? OSG is just that, a guide, BGB is where it's at, everyone needs to be able to pass it to even START!!!

Any vacancies for plumbers? :innocent:

Agreed, but knowing/finding the answers, is easier if you understand the question! (against the clock)
Problem I have is that I have not needed to consult the BGB for some time, and most of it has not been relevant for the electrical installation work I have done for years. As I was being interviewed for a 'domestic' position, I revised solely on that.

C & G 2382 is the 17th edition test. Open book exam. Know your way around the book, you'll pass. Fail, no sympathy. Sorry, no excuses, anyone who relies on the OSG and doesn't need to consult the BGB then fails should not be in the game. End of.
