Re: certifacates!!!

as i said, you don't become an electrician, the same way as you don't become a solicitor, accountant, brain surgeon or even plumber. you have to learn it. once you have done that, then you can think about practising your chosen trade.

After you've gained a number of qualifications (and assuming you live in England or Wales) you would need to join a scheme (Elecsa, Napit or NICEIC - there is one other but nobody I know is a member with them).

To gain membership and on top of needing a list of "qualifications" you have to have insurance, test equipment, tools, etc etc

Once you 've been accepted by a scheme its then and then only, possible to self certify YOUR OWN WORK ONLY.

Its mandatory to issue certificates for certain works, as is notifying LABC, plus its desirable to issue other certificates for minor works.

Some people give certificates away, some people charge. I do both - it depends on the work.

Why not make your own certificates ? , then you dont have to bother registering with a company, all you need is some a4 paper and felt tips - I' ve been doing my own for years.

Simon you say you are thinking about becoming an electrician but you dont say what your background is ie have you worked in an office environment or laboured to a brickie ?

Dont get me wrong I am not putting you off its just that a lot of guys are coming on the forum with the same when can you issue a certificate
this is hard to take in for me as I had to serve 4 years and then another 2 years plus get qualified so am I trying to put you off not at all but what I am saying and I say this to everybody you need to crawl before you walk I have no doubt you can obtain the correct qualifications and hopefully you will get the relivent experiance. Also my background is commercial industrial sparking moving on to BMS (HVAC) controls and building maintenance. So if you are serious then stick in but please dont try to be a part of the new age spark who thinks he or she has the measure of house wiring and if they dont know they will google it because in this game winging it is not an option.

I would also add that the blame for instant sparks are with the scheme providors who are quick to take the money but slow to maintain the standards within our industry.
