Hi,

I tried the search but couldnt seem to find much info.

Can someone confirm what tests need to be carried out on new christmas lights. its my companies policy that new equipment needs testing.

The lights are 240v double insulated transformed down to 36vdc LED type. Dont want to damage them before they even get used

Thanks in advance

Re-test due 7[SUP]th[/SUP] January. 12[SUP]th[/SUP] night is the 6[SUP]th[/SUP].

This is bureaucracy gone mad. If there like most Christmess lights they wont work any ways.

Christmas, BAH! HUMBUG!

A couple of years ago, the Ambulance service I work for specifically 'targeted' christmas lights.

All of ours at Sudbury Ambulance Station were failed and removed from service!!!!

I believe that many, many sets were removed accross the trust.

We just couldnt believe it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Still not been replaced.

More likely, if the truth were known, ...they just wanted to save a few bob!!

Can't see what they would fail on, probably tested by an idiot that pumped 500V through the lamps, ... went bang, ...So Failed ...lol!!!

Were they jealous of the blue flashy one's ?

Xmas Tree lights are or should be class II or III, therefore no EB.
IR at 250V if mains connected otherwise, VI and Functional Test is about as much as you can do

Thanks for that. Its mad but as you know safety is the hot topic so it needs to be signed off even if there all brand new

cheers for the replys everyone

Since you are based in the place where all the dodgy electrical stuff emanates ! Its just as well we have some form of H&S regulation, albeit a little handicapped .....

Nothing to do with where i'm based, commonsense works just as well here as it does in the UK... Also nothing to do with H&S, were talking about a daft company policy, that just needed a bit of commonsense applied.

Were talking about 12V/24V/36V, .....Not only that, but brand New straight out of the box. They either work or they don't. If they don't you take them back!!

To be perfectly honest i don't understand the policy itself, Why would you need to Pat Test a brand new appliance/equipment straight out of the box, risking warranty restrictions, ...beyond me!!! lol!!!

we had a similar issue at work, had to test all 110v leads for on site, all had to be stickered, so we tested a brand new one we had to get and needless to say it failed, took back to wholesalers and got another one which passed.

Common sense withstanding, As you maybe aware every company must have an audit trail of its procedures and electrical equipment used on its premises. This is in place for various reasons but mainly to protect the company's employer's liability insurance policy.

There are several regulations that have been put in place to protect both employer and employee one of which is PUWER.

I agree that the manufacturer's warantee for brand new appliances is recognized as suitable protection against dodgy equipment, but as most things these days, the company also has a duty of care to provide its own process of protection.

..... Oh and just add. The pound stretcher in Gloucester provided a couple of my students with two very interesting examples of voltage indicators
Both from our far eastern trading partners; both were supposed to measure 3-phase voltages - death trap to anybody who used them
