Now this is a little bit of a different approach than normal and you will find that in the real world you will be asked many things that you may have little or no experience in just because you are in the trade, so I have come up with a little task which requires little knowledge of the subject of the task but will see how resourceful you can be when set a task, you probably will not be ever asked anything like this yourself but its testing your detective work which will be a positive in the real world.

Bob the Welder is a proud man and he runs his own little portable business, now some of his work requires the metal to be preheated to a given temp' before he can commit the weld and it is crucial for a good weld that he know when the metal is ready to weld, been portable he has a lot of heavy gear and its prone to a few knocks and bashes so after busting his rather expensive thermal camara for a second time he tasked you to find a solution that is cost effective, very accurate and can be dropped knocked etc without worry and if broken is cheap to replace.... I don't require you to know how a specific device works just that it fulfils the customers requirements. You have google and any other means at your disposal although I ask for fair play you research it yourself and don't hop onto another forum and simply ask someone, this is what you will be tasked to do regularly on site in that a customer will often ask for a solution to a problem that you haven't really touched on before ...so there it is I want a way to know the metal has reached a certain predetermined temp' that is:-

Cost effective
Robust
Easy to replace
Accurate
Portable

Just to save any queries we will be looking for temp's between 50c and 300c now the product has to be accurate but we are a little flexible in that if he wanted say 150c the product just needs to be hotter than this so if its higher it will not matter, we are not trying to maintain a set temp just to ensure the product is hotter when welding commences.

Good Luck :cool3:

NOTE - PM only... Do not post your answers in this thread thankyou!

No, as he is portable he would more than likely be using a gas flame blower so the extent of metal been heated will be localised any bigger welds will be done in stages.

That's me out then good luck to everyone

Don't give up mate without having a go, I know your quite new to the ts but one thing everyone knows in here is that there is no such thing as a daft question or answer, please don't feel that you haven't got a chance, study the question and think about what darkwood is asking and with a bit of thought and research you may just come up with the best answer.

Darkwood beat me to it.

Seriously, I have no knowledge nor have I even seen any welding equipment, bit of a Google, I've found answers, picked what I thought was the best one and sent that in.

We're in the trainee section, you might get a bit of a ribbing but that's it, we're all going to give stupid answers at some point, followed by a bit of guidance which is how everyone learns.

Last competition, my first answer was MILES off, bit of direction and I got it right, took a bit of reading though, just have a go, you'll either learn something new, or demonstrate your existing knowledge.

You'll find in the real world your training can leave you unprepared for certain request and situations, now the above is an exercise to try gather information on a subject I hope you have little knowledge of, the deeper you research your task the more info you gather to select a suitable solution, this isn't really about solving this particular problem but is aimed at the broader picture of been resourceful when the need arises. You are all blessed in modern society having the internet at your beckon and call and something we never had, not even a mobile phone so an advantage to you but you still need to be able to negotiate the web and collect the correct info and translate that to a suitable solution... there is method in my madness here if you think its a strange question to ask Trainee's then you are correct and it's on purpose :)

This is the very reason why I approached Darkwood and asked him to set the question for this competition, I knew he would come up with something for you all to get your teeth into.
Also DW raises a good point, sometimes in the real world you get dealt scenarios like the above where you have to really use all your knowledge and resources to come up with a work around to a problem. Remember your customers will look to you for solutions for problems they can't solve and if you simply say you can't help them then believe me they will find someone who will.
This is a cracking little competion question, thanks again Dw for coming up with it.

Quite an easy solution DW, although I guess I can't enter?

Could do with a new tool bag after my last one was stolen in a suitcase coming back from the states.

If if any trainees want a nudge in the right direction, or need something explaining shout up, or PM.
