Spazz

I have recently moved into a new house, I have my assessment coming up in March time
The Consumer Unit currently has spears reading everything - no loops for anything.

Its an old MK unit with the old type MCBs (15A and 30A) and no RCDs

I am wondering if NAPIT would be happy with a CU change with everything as spares. I know I cant go any change the whole house to loops - and Im not as Im renting, ut Im not happy with the fact of no RCDs and 2 little boys who are obsessed with plug sockets. I do have covers on everything but the risk is to high for them to pull out a plug and put their fingers in.

By the way there are 2 Consumer Units - 1 for General Electrics and 1 for Space Heaters in each room (15A MCB) per heater.

You may find Tony & Engineer54 + a few others disagreeing with you there !! :rolleyes2:

Thanks for the link to that site about socket covers Ash_s3. We will be soon having the house inspected by ofsted so the missus can be registered for child minding. Should make for an interesting conversation if they insist we have to use them. We have been told previously we should be using them to conform to their standards.
I hate them, having been out to rectify faults caused by them in the past.

EDIT: I hate socket covers I mean, not ofsted. Ofsted haven't caused any electrical faults that I know of.

There is a myth amongst some Ofsted inspectors that socket covers are necessary, but Ofsted's position on socket covers as reported in an Ofsted document dated September 2011 is:

"Childcare safety issue - electrical socket covers

Some inspectors are continuing to make judgements about risks to children when inspecting childcare settings where the provider has decided not to use electrical socket covers on exposed sockets.

Our position on the use of electrical socket covers has not changed. We neither encourage nor discourage the responsible use of socket covers as part of a risk-assessed approach to electrical safety. In line with the relevant requirements for registration, it is up to each individual registered provider to demonstrate to us that the environment is safe for children and meets legal requirements. It is for the provider to decide, as part of the risk assessment they carry out at their premises, how best to protect children from any dangers associated with electric sockets and appliances.

Inspectors should not set actions or make recommendations in relation to the use of socket covers and should not refer specifically to these in their reports. If a provider is unsure whether or not to use socket covers and asks our advice, we should refer them to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA) and Child Accident Protection Trust websites for information to help them make a decision about the use of socket covers and the type of sockets considered as safe."

Of course, in reality, all undamaged BS 1363 sockets are safe.

See FatallyFlawed for further information on socket covers.

Andy, can you provide any further details of the faults you refer to?

hi fancy you mean ring final circuit ,because ring main is for sub stations at 11KV.
a spur is when you add , say an extra socket on to a ring main without extending the ring main, you are spuring off a sockgrt or a fused spur ....lets say just to keep it simple ...........
and a ring main is what it is,,,,,a continious run of cable that that goes from socket to ssocket then back to the board.....
a loop is used in lighting terminology in a loop in and out.... perm live and neutral in+ earth, ,- perm live to switch back on switch live,,, loop perm live and neutral + EARTH to next light and so on......
