Hi all, I normally stick to minor works etc but have been asked to fit and certify a new consumer unit. I am qualified to do the consumer unit but I have a question about the testing. I am ok to test my own work but I am one exam short of being able to legally test the work of others (got the online and practical, just the written to do), however, when I install a new CU, does the wiring become part of my install that I can legally test or is it part of a condition report? I am not with a scheme so I will have to inform the local authorities etc. Any help will be greatly appreciated, Thanks all.

ÂŁ360 inc vat if use building control. ÂŁ288 to join stroma for a year. If you are qualified it's a no brainier really. If this is your first job your probably better getting somebody else to work with you and them issue a cert

I was just trying to point out that there is no exam that makes you "legally" able to test other peoples work. Are you reffering to the 2395 by any chance? :smiley2:

I am yes, I have the online and practical, just waiting for the written. As I understand it, that final exam is all I am missing from being able to carry out the testing of other peoples work. I have all the other requirements, part P, regs etc.

It really is a no brainer, you are right. Didn't realise building control was so expensive. Info greatly appreciated.

How can you "have part p" and not understand what part p is?

And you want to test other people's work????

I thought that is what I was doing! If that is as helpful as you are going to be then please refrain from posting on my question please.

What you are doing is not really researching, you are just asking questions. Researching tends to involve quite a bit of searching for information from various sources and collating it in a useful manner.

If you had done better research you would already know that there is not a course which gives you any legal right or ability to test your own or other people's work. The ability to test electrical installations is a matter of experience and solid understanding of the background science of this trade.

Not all the requirements Vaquero.
You need a lot of experience.

I understand what you are saying and maybe I should have explained this earlier but I didn't think it relevant, my error. I am a 52 year old with an onc in electrical engineering and am an apprentice trained maintenance electrician who worked in the industry for 15 years. I came out of it to pursue light and sound engineering 20 years ago, which I still do, but due to the extent of travelling being incompatible with my wifes ill health I retrained 2 years ago to get back up to date, and I now concentrate on minor works repairs etc so that I can care for my missus, hence the nature of the original question.
