Hello can I have some advice please.

I have been asked to move a consumer unit by a family friend.
It needs to be moved 3m which is fine.

The 2 problems that I have -

1. No main protective bonding conductors - which will obviously need sorting before I can change the board.

2. It is a student house and shower cubicles have been put put in all of the bedrooms and there are sockets within 3m of all the cubicles.

The board will need to be changed to a split load dual RCD board as there is no RCD protection for any of it and I will need to carry out a periodic first as there is no previous certification for any of the work (this was originally done 4 years ago).

The main question is can I change the board knowing that there are sockets within 3m of the shower cubicles and code it as a C2 on the periodic or do I have to blank these sockets off before carrying out the board change?
There is no way that the sockets will stay blanked but I need to cover myself.

Many Thanks

MDJ You are such a hero.
I wish I was as great as you and knew everything.
We can't all be perfect though can we?

If you knew as much as me you would know about 1% fella, back to the original post, if you move the DB and add bonding will you need to certify? will you need to put it through building control? is the original supply adequate for 5 showers? will 2 rcds be enough for 5 showers, a cooker and all the sockets in the house with all sorts plugged into them? does the 3 mtr rule really matter in this case as a cubicle has been added to a bedroom? if it does matter is it your problem or will you just need to mention it on the certificate? thats if you need to add one, thats one of the first questions I asked, have you got insurance to cover any works carried out on this your M8s property?

Have fun.

Wow, is that all???? And to think I looked up to you!!LOL. I thought you was well brainy!!

when I took my apprentiship we only had meggars and didn't loop test anything haha, I can't remember seeing a test sheet until I was about 20, we took City and guilds back then and never knew what NVQs were, I should change the 1% to 2% I suppose, but then that would be bragging

Agreed with previous posts:-

NewSparky is bringing the earthing and bonding into line with current Regs and then updating the CCU to provide RCD protection.

His updates will make the installation considerably safer than before. Any outstanding non-compliances on the existing installation, must then be clearly identified in the 7671 (2008) deviations section of the installation report and recommendations for further upgrades MUST be made in writing to the customer stating clearly the level of urgency. If NewSparky is qualified and competent, this shouldn't be a problem to do!

His responsibility must be the correct installation of the new earthing, bonding and the replacement consumer unit. If the customer decides to ignore any other advice, then that's his call because there's now an audit trail there to say that further work should be done.
NewSparky in any event can walk away knowing the installation is far safer than before he did his work.

Bet you still look lovingly at your Thorntons slide rule and your log tables. I was so sad with my S/R and kept it in a purpose made plywood case! Then it all changed when Sinclair brought out that nasty little 'Polish Notation White Calculator'.

No doubt most of the lads will be reading this and thinking "WTF is he on"?

I used mine for stirring tins of paint.

still use mine. is there anything better out now? my s/rule is a posh one it's got hp/kw conversion scale.

Is this an HMO property? The requirements for rcd protection on the socket outlets when a shower was installed in a bedroom have been out for ages & supplymentary bonding. From what i remember it was 2.5 m which they increased to 3m from the edge of zone 1 The original sparks should have picked up on this before the work was carried out. 4 years ago would be notifiable. I would be very careful how you proceed, this could could open a can of worms
