Hi all realy silly question maybe. Doing consumer change on old consumer 3036 type! now if all test,s out right is it our job to fit rcd protected mcb,s or rcbo,s or indeed any rcd protection at all ! or is it down to what the customer wants to pay ? what are the rules on this? thanks ian:confused:

For instance 411.3.3 requires that socket-outlets for use by ordinary persons intended for general use have RCD protection. Does this apply to sockets that are intended to be used for a specific item of equipment such as a fridge, a dishwasher or even a TV or a Sky box?

Yes a dedicated socket for a fridge/Freezer etc doesn't need RCD protection.

But how do you know that that existing cables do not need RCD protection.

If I knew for a fact that there was a dedicated socket outlet for said items and that it was run within an earthed metallic protection/was buried >50mm in the wall surface or clipped direct/ run in trunking etc. Then yes No RCD protection.

In older properties that I have visited I would place a bet that NO circuit cable is run >50mm below the surface

what a waste of time . im still here tho lol

I feel the same

Whether socket-outlets require RCD protection or not is immaterial. We're not installing any.
The same goes for cables.
What we're installing is a CU, and the discussion is whether RCD protection is required in the CU.
My contention is that there is no Regulation in BS7671 that requires the RCD for socket-outlet or cable protection to be in the CU.
If you can find a Regulation thet refutes this view point then please feel free to do so.

tbh i think this has been discussed enough, and unfortunately not in the most professional way. we all have our own interpretations to the regulations and i guess one day we may be called upon to justify our actions, and as long as we have followed the regulations there will be no come back. And on that note i believe this thread has run its course before more falling outs happen.
