Discuss Correct Electrical Installation Instructions and Regulations in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

Hi All,

I am in a dispute with David Wilson Homes (aka Barratt's) and David Wilson Homes who have built my house to a incredibly low standard.

We are in dispute over the electrical cabling as none of the cabling is clipped on vertical runs, cable is penetrating the roof insulation and cutting into roof insulation.

The NHBC are saying the clipping of cabling is a suggestion in some cases which sounds like they don't want to help so I am trying to get some proof from skilled electricians backup up by the manufacture installation instructions.

When NHBC was instructing DWH it was in our favour and DWH had to fix it, now it seems there attitude has changed since they now have to own the project as DWH has abandoned us after 18 months.

Our Cabling in teh pictures is:-
Prysmian (A) BASEC Electric Cable 300/500v BS60046242Y 2x2.5+1.5H

I have also attached the NHBC Resolution report showing photo's of the issues and the NHBC original findings,

I hope you guys can help.

Edit: report is now in following post with personal details removed

Do you have any idea which of the scams, sorry schemes the electrician was with, NICEIC, STROMA, ELECSA to name a few, there are plenty more to choose from, find out which ones did your wiring and ask for a report, do you have any installation certificates?

The company was P&J Massingham and no we got no electrical certificates and David Wilson Homes cannot provide one nor any installation reports. A little googling and ironically I find they were electrical contractor of the year for DWH in 2014. Speaks volumes.

Good luck, as a matter of interest are your fellow neighbours on board with you.

I know many neighbours have issues maybe not as many us but lots of issues however teh resident committee does not want to admit there are "issues" or "defects" as they think this will affect peoples house prices. Surly a house that meets standards should be the home owners ultimate aim, not to suffer alone or put there head in the sand and hope the issues go away. :-(

BS7671 requires a new installation to be have an Installation Certificate.

Regulation 632.3 (in the green book, anyways)
Following completion of inspection and testing, an electrical installation certificate, together with particulars of the electrical installation and a schedule of test results, must be provided to the person who ordered the work. It must be signed three times (by the designer, the installer and the inspector/tester) to certify that the installation has been designed, constructed, inspected and tested in accordance with BS 7671.

Looks like they are members of the NICEIC judging from the logo on the van, how old is the house? get in touch with NICEIC and the Federation of house builders

Thanks for the Information. I will report to the above organisations. My house is under 2 years. We moved in December 2014 and I expected better than this from a alleged 5 star builder.

Not just NICEIC I see on their facebook page pics of their vans ect - It also shows "trustmark" approved through ECA although they are all under one umbrella now. As above though NICEIC would be my first point of contact after trying through the electrical contractors or builders first.
Had a very brief skim through their facebook page and some of the pictures posted which I presume is of work they are "proud" to show off would make me think your house may well not be the only installation that to put it kindly is a bit shoddy.
As above again I would also bet all/most of your neighbours wiring will be in this condition due to the fact that these things are generally done by small teams and they get the contract for the whole estate/road/scheme. Same old story the neighbours will be blissfully unaware that their install does not meet certain regulations and "may" in some cases even be unsafe......But who goes checking their wiring or even for the presence of an installation certificate until the light goes out. I would be telling my neighbours about your wiring and advise them to all to what you have found.

Didn't see the ECA as did Diddy, someone else to contact

it'all boils down to cost. cheapest way gets the job done. same with dry lining instead of real plaster. weetabix blocks instead of bricks, roof trusses instead of purlins and rafters, plastic push fit plumbing instead of proper copper pipework. sure there's more.

Been out the house bashing game for a few years now sadly it is treated like a production line Barratts had a big rush about June/July for end of year figures one big rush all trades on top of each other I kept on saying electrical and plumbing are technical trades can't just lash it in like BBC changing rooms/60 min makeover. There seemed to be less and less respect for each others work on site.******** it it's in my way etc.Sorry rant over but it's mostly the reality these days.Ok by looking at photo's could be done with more clipping (support of cables) but who is to say it wasn't at 1st fix

Quite so....I suppose the EIC that would "obviously" have accompanied this new installation would have diligently pointed out any concerns and deviations from relevant regulations that he/she spotted. Or maybe it was a driveby EIC lol where the poor sod/sap that has signed this has never even been to site.....god forbid, Such things are always"ok" until something happens where someone MUST be the fall guy. Glad its not me lol.
