that road on the left has been sealed off and the biggest thing you can get through there is a motorbike

(donington lane is the one that has been closed off)

Let's have a bit of positivity in this thread. I took my lads out for a 16 mile ride the other weekend, their first on their new BMXes and their first big ride that took them on large stretches of road including A roads.
As we rode single file in a group of 5, I was not only impressed with my kids' road sense but the attitude and patience of drivers that gave us plenty of room, probably in part to my boys' age, and took their time and space in sharing the road with us. We had a cracking day, and I hope it to be the start of a long love of safe cycling for my boys.

i dont think anyone has a problem with that andy, its more of 3+ a breast or in the middle of the road at 5pm on a friday etc that really winds people up or they drifting all over the road.

the thing is if they hit you what do you do?

you cant claim off there insurace cause they dont have any so it will really affect you, i guess you could sue them directly for the costs

And there lies the consideration for other road users giving them ample space to overtake safely when they can.
some cyclists seem to think they own the road also so do some drivers consideration for others is the key.

I have to say I don't see any of that sort of behaviour round here, but maybe that's because I'm generally driving in and around urban areas. Round here the problem cyclists tend to be chav types on their phones weaving about the roads rather than large groups such as cycling clubs.
My city is also pretty bike friendly though with lots of cycle paths, quite a lot of them away from the roads.

This is a big topic for me.

I live in East London, not sure if your aware but the powers that be have deemed it sensible to install "super cycle highways" everywhere. There is less room for cars on already crowded roads, and the majority, yes the majority that I see have no regard for motorists. Red lights do not matter, filtering really fast through standstill traffic so you can't turn off at junctions.

They need to have accountability, then they would become more considerate. At the moment that can do what they please.

Question for you, do you constantly drive as close to the near side of the road as you expect a cyclist to ride their bike?

when i did my driving test i hit every drain on the test but didnt hit the curb once

The problem I see is cyclist do not need any highway code education or any knowledge of a vehicles blind spots ...I recently had my left hand indicator on at traffic lights and did clock the arrival of a cyclist just out of my view behind my van, when I set off he started creeping passed me level with my rear tyres passenger side even though I was about to turn, had i not clocked him he'd have been under my wheels - its ok all these bikers complaining etc but the biggest killer on the road for them is left hand turning vehicles and all that needs to be introduced is a statutory course to allow them to drive on the main roads that hi-light all these issues - strange how you need to go through an education system to legally drive on the roads but you can just ride your bike any age without awareness or a safety helmet - ignorance is the biggest killer here and very rare any driver gets prosecuted.

No but do move into the side to allow vehicles to overtake. As I said consideration for other road users is the key.

Do they still do the cycling proficiency test in schools? We had to get our triangular badge before we could get a bike pass.

We have a busy a road near us with a cycle path alongside of it and you still get nutters using the road. Usually the 'professional club' cyclists who think the cycle path is not good enough for them.
