My faithful black labrador "Marley"

most rescue centres will have some sort of grading system where they let you know about the dogs suitability for different environments.
I.E kids, other dogs, being left alone etc.
I found this out just recently whilst looking for a rescue dog.
My elderly retriever just recently died after many years as a loyal pet great with kids and other dogs but completely useless as a guard dog :)

As has already been said many times, almost all dogs start out great its just the owners that cause the problems.

Cant beat a german shepherd, they make good pets can be trained to a high level and are very protective over their posessions, you never own a shepherd they own you.I,ve had them as pets and worked as a dog handler and had working dogs one of my working dogs was great with our toddler she could do what she wanted with it,but god help anyone who tried to hurt the kid,the dog would have eaten them. They may take a bit more training but they are worth it.

The thing I've found Phil is with our German Shepherd we have to keep on top of the training but he picks new stuff up really quickly so really we're just working him maybe 20-30 minutes a day. The rest of the time we're just enjoying his company

My English Bulldog doing an impression of Sylvester Stallone!

2yr old rescue, pedigree with papers, taken away by the RSPCA as was kept in a concrete prison without any contact after the Kennel clubs rules changed about breeding mother to son. Never walked, fed once a day, no training including house training. Breeders lost all interest in him after they couldn't breed him to the mother and he was to old to sell as no longer a puppy.

He house trained in two days, basic commands in a week, walked everyday, has his own arm chair, and end of the sofa. Spoilt rotten now, absolute fantastic dog, but they shouldn't be bought as they've been bred to have to many disability's.

He's currently snoring at my feet.

Spaniels & Collies are great with kids.. Although my bear is great with kids, she does suffer a bit of indigestion afterwards. na just kidding.. She’s great but it’s not the sort the kids can take for a walk when suddenly she sees a meow!! The kids used her as a husky with a sled in the last bit of snow we had a while back and they played for hours.. Good to have a dog you can trust around little ones, either way!

My German Shepherd was rescue. She spent her first year in a cage and was never socialized or walked. When i got her i cut my work to part time for 6 months and spent nearly everyday walking and training her. By the end she was running free off her lead and a completely different dog. Only issue left was she likes to play rough. In the end we got the rotty for her to play with so she would leave other dogs alone for the most part. Rotty was a doddle to train as he pretty much copied everything the german shepherd did
