My best mate, Stig!!, gentle, predictable, placid and very very loving.

I would recommend a big dog over a little one any day!, and I trust him implicitly. He's even angelic with my little dot of a mum!

staffies is definatly a no no had to take my mums cat the vets there was a few staffies in there which their owners just couldnt control and as for yorkies the mother in law got 1 i hate the little git and as for a rotwieller thats also a no because it would remind me of the mother in law

its a nice idea about getting a rescue dog but as been said dont know about its history

as for the husky i dont think would be ideal for a 1st time dog owner

im thinking golden retriver at the moment seens how they used as blind dogs

you cannot class all staffies as the same. it all depends how they are brought up. they are the most loyal dog and very friendly. its a shame little chavs use them to look cool and think they are some gangster because they have one. thats why they have a bad name, but i got mine from wood green and she is brilliant, only ever barks when someone comes to the house until she knows who it is, which is all i ask of her :)

I agree to a point but take a look at how the likes of Victoria Stilwell have taken an old dog set in it's ways on and completely turned it around. Our very own Phil D has done exactly the same, he got himself a rescue german shepherd who hated men. Now she's Phil's best mate. Take a look for some of the photos of her on his posts about dogs

Children and close contact with a predator that may revert to instinct, why take the chance ?

I know that children can't be 100% protected, but why invite possible and needless danger, they are never going to be deprived because of the lack of a family predator

I always had a dog of some sort, but when the kids arrived,I never for one moment thought of putting their lives in danger by owning a dog
In my opinion only Children and dogs, especially small children, its not a good idea

I agree dogs will respond to kindness , and once you get their trust they are loyal , you have to be able to understand them, they are all individuals.

I'm not even gonna comment on that. we shall agree to disagree!

Des, as long as the dog and the child are closely supervised and never left alone together then there should (hopefully)never be a problem

I fully agree with that statement trev, also with the comments about dogs in general
On the whole a dog will end up being good or bad depending on the owner

However, supervision unfortunately sometimes fails and tragedy can occur, and with any dog irrelevant of the breed

Each person must make their own decision and live with the benefit or the consequences whichever it be

That's the key statement as far as I'm concerned mate. It comes down to training and the dog being shown, kindly, that he or she is at the bottom of the pile no matter what happens. Even our 2 year old grandson can take things off our dog and he's quite prepared to accept that

Well I will comment on your post:smile5:

I have an opinion and I expressed that opinion.I have not said I am right or wrong,I have not advised anyone what they should or shouldn't do
I welcome your response to any post I make and would consider your views whether it be agreeing with my opinion or completely opposite

In fact if the view was convincing enough,I have no problem altering my own

I just looked at your pics and those and High towers are lovely
I have owned and loved many dogs in my time, but on this subject they have no place

I am a dog lover have 3 children and a cross labrador with gordon setter he is as gentle with the kids as could ever be asked but I have seen his guarding the house as well and he is a different dog. I dont think it is possible to keep on eye on them everyday without making a mistake sooner or later. Dogs are only about 8 times removed from wolfs and are incredibly strong, I think as in humans sometimes luck of draw comes into it but would still trust 99.9 % of dogs with my kids than humans any day.
