Is it good practice with 230v downlights to connect them to pork pie jbs via a flex, or can the 1.5mm twin and earth just loop in and out ? I've always done it the first way, but I was recently questioned why.

If the connector block was in some kind of container/box with cord grips and the connectors were the type that had little metal flap under the screw to the screw is not tightening directly onto the cables nothing at all. I agree connectors are the simplest quickest way of doing this but there are just too many regs against them now.

And one of these regs would be .................................

sorry there's no regs directly against them however they must be enclosed reg 526.9 and also the problem with using multi-wire, fine wire cables with solid core cables directly under a screw reg 526.8 I do apologise I assumed you meant using connectors with insulating type.

my prefered choice (not maintenance free but accessible behind light)

so that would be bunched together then wouldn`t it? Have you looked at a connector block recently?....THERE ARE 2 WAYS IN.....

very true however with Flex as it is a multi wire/fine wire cable unless the connector is a suitable type i.e the screw does not clamp directly onto the cable it is still not permitted the last time I looked most of the connectors we still get from the wholesalers have the screws in direct contact with the cables.

e the cable guard plates and never give trouble.i'd call it a draw. the terminal strips i use ( from electric center hav

bloody laptop having that stupid pad where i rest my elbow.
