Is work in an en-suite still definitely notifiable?
The new Part P doc says that additions or alterations to existing circuits in a special location are notifiable, but it then goes on to say that "in this regulation special location means -" and goes on to describe, for rooms containing a bath or shower, an area which looks like the zones to me.
So I think that work is only notifiable in a bathroom if any of the additions or alterations fall within the zones.
Anyone got a different view on this?
Seems a bit mad to me, I think it should be the whole bathroom really, but that's what approved document P seems to say now ...

Well to me the definition of an ensuite is a room immediately adjacent to a bedroom containing a shower or bath - so yes its notifiable.
But doesn't it depend on whether or not any of the work falls within the zones, assuming that there are no new circuits?
For example, if it's only lighting and the ceiling is >2.25m then it could be that none of the work falls within the zones.
Your question was about work in an ensuite falling under part P!
To be honest unless its a 2.4m high ceiling I will still notify - its only £1.60 and done and dusted.
I agree, I think that I will just notify work in a bathroom anyway, but then I'm registered with a scheme so it's easy for me. The reason I raised the point was I thought that the discussion was about whether or not the work the OP was having done was notifiable or not.
Clarification please. The regs are quite clear, any new circuit requires an Electrical Installation Certificate together with Schedule of Inspections and Schedule of Test Results. An extension or addition to an existing circuit will require a Minor Works Certificate, as Tel says above the work in the en suite is notifiable (unless it's like for like replacements).
Any existing circuits being added to or extended must be brought up to compliance with current regs.
If I were you OP I'd be inviting the builder and his "electrician friend" in for a chat before any more work is done.
Just to throw my thought into the MW issue, I always use MW certs but that's me. I'm sure it says in the regs that a MW may be used not must be used. Therefore a EIC is okay.
yes. you need an EIC (electrical installation certificate). if no new circuits have been installed a MEWIC (minor electrical works installation certificate) might be sufficient. what's your location. a member or 2 must be in your vicinity, could pop in and have a look.
Yep I'd use 5 MW certsif you worked on 5 circuits you would fill out 5 individual mw certs? Or do you use multiple circuit ones?

I am in Chelmsford Essex. I would be eternally grateful (both emotionally and financially) if a member in the area is available to come over and chat about what has been done and take a quick look at one of two things, particularly as there seems to be varying opinions on what certification is required and what if anything is notifiable.
This issue is giving me sleepness nights at present (particularly as I don't trust the builder - my wife does not even want him stepping back into the house tomorrow! Most importantly I really want to make sure my children are safe at night when they are sleeping.
One thing that I forget to mention earlier and I am not sure if it has any relevance, is that since the electrical commence about 4 light bulbs have blown which is unusually high number during such a short space of time.
