Hi everyone
I am thinking of getting a pair of these as I have a job that has been started but I have to terminate a 35mm swa into a ryfield board that is already feeding 4 units so I am unable to turn the supply off. The cable termination is ok as there is room in the Trunking above but the actual terminals seem quite close so would rater have the protection of the gauntlets just to be on the safe side.
Also where would be the best place to buy from as I'd rather not do eBay and get a dodgy pair thanks in advance.

ignore uksparks a lot of members do, he is on there blocked list

Cheeky git, I wasn't thinking straight and overlooked the fact you would have a dead circuitry to test first!

it was the fact that I was rolling round in my chair at the shock thT someone could be such a plonker and work in such a dangerous way for no reason.

You test it exactly the same as you do any other circuit, you don't always isolate a whole board just to test one circuit so that's no different.

There is nothing wrong with properly planned and executed love working if it is necessary and all options for isolation have been discounted.

...A rare slip from your good self...it's the reason i have two beautiful children...:icon12:

Just to add to the arc flash episode I had to repair the damage. I found the screwdriver burnt in half and the lads glasses, they had metal embedded in the lenses.
He didn’t have full face or upper body protection.
15% burns and metal/shrapnel impregnation. A long time in hospital and even longer off work.
He’s now alive and well, and has taken up the ministry.

Just to add even further, it's pure lunacy to be undertaking this kind of work on your own, in fact any live working in these sorts of situations, should always be considered as at the very least a two man job.
A full set of fully 1KV insulated live working tools should again always be used, not just insulated handles and they come in expensive, very expensive!!

I have had to shut down a few blocks of flats in the past when doing DNO riser replacement work and thats when I was working for a DNO , we had all the right PPE and never worked alone , the gloves you speak of are what we used when pulling the main fuses together with full visor and correct clothing , its never a case of working live in these instances (isolation available) it may mean carding all the properties and giving a few days notice ...

Was with Northern Power grid when they came out to replace a blown 400A fuse. Apart from all the PPE he had a clever device that plugged into the fuse holder, it did some tests and confirmed it was OK to put the fuse back in. Don't know what is was doing but it looked expensive.

Seen the after effects of working live when a collegue had to have his arm in a bag for 6 months because the molten copper from the exploding MCCB burnt his skin off. If his hand wasn't in the way of his face it'd be a lot more serious.

It's smart to learn the lesson before the bad things happen.

Look at EAWR (or the HSE guidance for), and follow the justification tree for live working.
Also ask the customer how they manage in the event of an unplanned incoming mains failure.
IF they say "well we just have to manage" then tell them they will just have to manage with you isolating the supply for you to work.
If they say they can't then just give them an unplanned loss of supply to see how they cope.
it is just not worth risking your well being, nor risking prosecution.
I have actually sacked a spark for working live and I would again, and again.

as paul says, working live should only be undertaken when it is impractical to isolate or no other option.. this does not mean inconvenient or an hour or two of down time.

give me a spark who can work live.just take the right precautions with the right ppe and confidence in your own abilities and you will be ok.
how do you think jointers get on when they have to do a live joint?
to many nannies on here wonder how they ever get on

the main difference is they have been trained to work live and have the correct gear.

most don't have the correct gear because they say it is too expensive

And also look how much training the jointers get, and practice with the power off.. Also how much their tool set costs....

Jointing a cable is one thing , but working live in an area surrounded by live busbars is something else , I have worked with jointers and its restively straight forward for them to work live , and I have also seen inside busbar chambers and in some rye fields and its different story , not something I would do ..
