I hope the public can't read this thread. ÂŁ7 an hour might be coming down.

Dom and his programme is just what it is. Crap. One programme a client wanted a huge extension for ÂŁ25 k then wondered why it didn't happen. Often 2 sides to some stories.

Don't get me wrong rogue traders should be shot. But maybe a similar programme about rogue clients who constantly changes the spec and doesn't pay would give a more balanced perspective!

Rouge clients for sure, it's a standing joke between me and the missis when its on, that bleeting bird should be shot an'all (after;)

This is going to sound drastic, a few dead bodies attributed to poorly trained domestic installers (I can’t bring myself to use the word electrician) would boost the trade.
The government would be forced to do something following a judicial enquiry.

It’s only government intervention that will stop the flow of inexperienced and incompetent DI’s being turned out by “for profit” training and registration bodies.

If I’ve offended anyone, no, I’m not sorry. You would be among the ones that national registration would weed out.

PEM I hate say it but balance and perspective is not going to happen and if we get anymore like the US then NICEIC will be sponsoring Dom's show a bit like Rated People sponsoring Phil Spencer

I can tell you now they can!!

And because of this myth your spreading "that sparks are on 7 quid an hour" when YOU have never had to work for that amount and the only other people who have was ether 7 years ago or trainees.

I can see what you're saying but that's what part P was supposed to be for, and that all seemed a bit 'knee-jerk' and 'box-ticky' to me. I think as long as someone can work on their own property and just get an EICR when it comes to move, there will always be someone prepared to stand in and act as a 'locum DIYer' to save a few quid on red tape.
I think the best way to resolve situations like this and stop them going underground is to use the old 'carrot' method and less of the 'stick', ie making it easy enough to get a 'proper' electrician, ie one with the necessary qualifications to satisfy, say, the JIB.
All the paperwork, notification etc could still be done by these competent persons' schemes, but that should be optional - it should be just as easy for a competent electrician to fill in his own forms and post them off with no financial penalty.

I completely disagree, the farce that is part p was brought in because an MPs daughter died through faulty electrical work. Had it been my daughter or yours it would have been just one of those things. Maybe if the debacle that is our trade now was to be made public knowledge then something would happen to benefit it, what's the only way that's going to happen?......I'm sure Tony is big enough and clever enough to fight his own corner but I couldn't help it.

that is completely false my friend.
part p , and the building regs in general , was introduced because tens of millions of millions of ÂŁ's was being undeclared to the tax man by tradesmen working the domestic home-improvements boom of the early 2000's.
the notification process ensures earnings cant be hidden. ;-)

absolutely nothing to do with anyones death , because as we all know , the uk already has one the safest electrical systems globally even before the recent rcd frenzy.

its always about the money.
if it was about safety then scheme membership would be free but highly selective and policed stringently.
but its not.
lol.

.
I'll accept that that was one of the reasons, perhaps even the main one but it took a death for the powers that be to wake up to it

Ducksy The situation we have is guy and gals for whatever reason want a fast track into the trade so they do their crash course then as seen on this forum people want to work for nothing or petrol money to get experience so they then take this mentality to employment agents who take them on at ÂŁ7 and hour and then charge the customer ÂŁ20.

This is the situation we are in and as far as I am concerned the Schemies and the ÂŁ54k a year training centres have undermined our trade not profession but trade and as I have said before insted of people getting a sound training we now have the "Help I have just installed a CU and the RCD will not reset" posts.

So am I a doom sayer no because I am starting to see it happening in front of me I do repairs on rentals but I am getting told that the letting agent is being offered Gas safety checks and PAT testing plus a cut down EICR for ÂŁ65 so how in Gods name can they offer this if they are not paying ÂŁ7 an hour

the usual, doesn't need any more explanation than this...

Well that changed a lot I don't think probably made it worse as putting part P in lifted the costs for electricians who in turn increased their prices to the customer who in turn were quite happy to go for cash discount jobs from people who were either not registered or worse not even electricians who ironically come on this forum when they get stuck.

So in a sense the introduction of Part P helped by forums like this has undermined the very system that was meant to raise standards. Thing is if the taxman wants to check who is trading they can do this via the electrical suppliers and wholesalers because from Screwfix to Newey to CEF to Edmundsons and many more they all have you details as a customer on their systems ie your address type of account what you have purchased over the year. They also record cash sales and if the taxman did what they have done with scrap metal dealers where they have forced them to pay by cheque or electronic transfer that has now seen metal thefts collapse by 60% then this might force the flybye night people out of our trade.

Even if they forced wholesalers to take ID and proof of address on sales this may act as a deterrent and yes the sheds could be a problem on this one thing for sure when the taxman realises as with the scrap metal industry that it brings crime down and puts revenue up then me thinks the building trade would be next.
