hello, ive got my 1st part p assessment with Elecsa a week on friday. ive got everything in place. i was hopeing that you fun loving guys could help me out at this point. im losing interest in my revision (dont seem to do it well).

COULD YOU PLEASE POST RANDOM QUESTIONS ON HERE THAT ARE THE SORT OF QUESTIONS LIKELY TO BE ASKED SO I CAN PRACTICE LOOKING THEM UP OR TEST MY MEMORY.

PLEASE AND THANK YOU.

you know what. im starting to think i'm doing the wrong things going for Elecsa. i cant get my head round the lingo. or remember how to work round the regs book. ALL this month my lucks been on my arse (debt, some numpty crashing into my car, lack of xmas funds, and the general depression of claiming JSA) and ive got the feeling i've waisted sh*t loads of money that could have gone on the kids at xmas.

really am regretting this now.

Don't loose heart now matey, the best book to have a good look through before your assessment I would say is the OSG

It has the info you need but in easier to understand and remember terms than BS 7671.

Chapter 11 has the RCD info you need.

The NICEIC assessor asked me the following:

  1. minimum insulation resistance value between conductors
  2. maximum RCD trip time for x1 and x5 cycle
  3. explain how safe isolation done
  4. expected Ze value for the supply system
  5. asked me to prove the existence of bonding to the water mains as it’s concealed under the floor board
  6. caught me out when I had L-N settings instead of L-E on my meter while doing Zs testing at the sockets
  7. questioned about difference of Zs values from two outlets on the same double socket
  8. location for smoke alarms in a dwelling
  9. and … make sure you do the functional RCD test after testing it with your meter … “very important”.

Best of luck!

Chin up. Sounds like you need a day or two off. Hopefully return after a break with renewed vigour and enthusiasm. We all have bad days or weeks. Don't let it get you down. I'm sure with a positive attitude and some help from the locals here you'll come right. :)

From what I have experianced they are wanting to pass you but want to make sure you are safe. The questions are not hard and you do not need to know the answer but you must know where to get and be able to look up the answer. You can use crib sheets with all the standard values on, there are some in the stickies in this forum.

I have not seen anyone post that they have failed.

Testing RCDs at 5* is only for 30mA or less. For 100mA RCDs and above your max test would be at 1* as at 5* the voltages on the CPC and any bonded metalwork may be dangerous.

Follow Marvo's advice and you should be fine.

Questions:
What % of lights should be energy efficient under part L ?
When is RCD protection not required when adding a new circuit to an existing installation?
What will happen in a TNC- S installation if the supplier neutral is lost.

Please don't ask me the answers, I would need to go and look them up :)

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Don't become despondent or lose heart, chill out a little if you can,for various reasons you will Not fail the assessment
In order to fail you would have to be one clueless candidate, which you are not, as you have demonstrated in this thread

By the way, things get tough for all, believe me its just a blip, things always get better

Personally my luck at the moment has gone like this
I have a broken foot,my wife was today just diagnosed with a liver problem.my estate car which I use for work is in the car park with the boot squashed into the back seats and the vehicle that did it nowhere to be seen.
My boy just sacked from a good job because of cocked up train schedules,Over the weekend my parkray coal heater has sprung a leak meaning a massive rip out of my grate or full gas central heating, which I cant afford, mainly because I am no longer earning at present,so there's little or no heating for xmas
Finally I am typing this reply looking at a new monitor, because the old one decided to pick this week to give up the ghost

Problems and worries are when there is no food on the table, everything else is just inconveniance

DO NOT PANIC, they do want you to pass.
If you are not sure of the answer from memory then look it up, why not, you cannot remember the whole of the BS7671 regulations, GN3, Part P building regulations off by heart; you will have the books there.
Stay calm, ask questions of the assessor if you are not sure, like you asked do you mean Ze? valid and reasonable question that shows you are thinking about it and want to get it right.

do you mean max ZE?

TNCS 0.35 OHMES
TNS 0.8 OHMES
TT 21 OHMES

to consider building regs: DOCUMENTS L1:

are certs to be kept for 6years (same as the warranty is valid for?)

Well done on identification of the EFLI as meaning (in this case) Ze, I should have said external EFLI.
Values are correct, good. Remember that the units are ohms. oral test so it wont matter.

Building regs this was a bit of a wide question, Part L1 is a major consideration but you also need to consider part P!, Part E, sound penetration, Part M, height of switches and sockets, Part A if you are chasing, drilling/ notching joists or part C if you are penetrating an external wall and part B if you need to consider fire safety from penetrations.

Part of the requirements for Part P assessed enterprises is that certificates must be kept for at least 3 years.

Good luck and do not get despondent.

do you know when i joined this forum i was expecting sparks who are old school. with the attitude of you ever know or you dont. and not been very helpful. but guess what? i was wrong, i ask for advise or just to relief of general stress and it all comes out. not many people judge you or take the micky. i have to say thank you to all on here. i do honestly believe that among electricians there is a kind of family loyalty. and im thankful to you all for your advise and kind works.
