Re: how not to wire your extension

I must confess my original intention after having stumbled across the website from elsewhere was a bit of p*ss taking and ridicule.

But once jonwade appeared as the customer on the receiving end of the work my intentions did change to being somewhat more helpful.

The thing is 6months down the line it may have been fine, or it may not have been nobody can predict it really.

You could have ended up like the house I was working at yesterday, a forest of dehumidifers and a machine which basically blows hot air into the insulation layer under the screed to try and drive out the water which has collected under there! As far as I know a couple of compression fittings on the pipework buried in the screed had leaked and filled the insulation layer up with water, enough that it travelled through to next door (semi-detached house)

Thanks. I am indeed happy with the building, the windows, the roof, the flooring. I watched all the major bits done and was present when the building inspector came round too. So I am still having the builders complete the work (once the plumbing is sorted) and do the internal work (2 new walls, new window and install kitchen) but getting the electrics and plumbing all done separately.

I did have the electrics reviewed by a local firm who said that it was passable, and should not cause problems, and if it did it is on the RCA and easy to replace the cables. So although I am not happy with how the wires are as such, that is how they are staying. But if I had a good friend who was a sparky I'd probably get them to change it while the builders are away too - but I only know a plumber!

Re: how not to wire your extension

"Passable" "should not cause problems" what would you say if a mechanic said that about your brakes?

Re: how not to wire your extension

Speedfit work on friction so unless pipe is squeeky clean it wont work.

Imho always glue pipe if you have to use speedfit

It was just the otherday i ended up taping up a hose to an outside tap because speedfit is rubbish.

When i was at college doing 2330 we did a little plumbing and at least 1/10 failed.

Cant beat a bit of soldering (doesnt help people don't always use the right inserts. It was news to me last week there is different sized inserts for 15mm pipe

It does'nt work on friction there are little metal blades that act like barbs, when you push the collar in they release the pipe, the problem comes from the pipe itself getting scratches in it when dragged across the floor or pulled in. Then when the fitting is put on it weeps past the seals vier the scrathes, its the same with hep2o, the only difference in inserts are between hep and speedfit, you have to use hep inserts on hep pipe and the same for speedfit, to my knowledge you should never use glue

Re: how not to wire your extension

As everyone has said its a p**s poor job all round but as i suspect the electrics in this extention have been taken from existing circuit and so are not notifiable under Part P which proves Part P does not work in it present state. If any Part P reg spark signs that off, which still is not completly clear if this is allowed yet , they need to be reported.

Re: how not to wire your extension

I only use the push fit stop ends have never used anything else speed fit for pressurised pipes I have use push fit poly pipe waste fittings which are good and ways to use
