The Press Association: Bid to recruit female electricians

to try and encourage more females to train as an electrician. I think this is great (as Im a woman) and I know another training provider did this a few years ago up north to encourage women in this sector. I do wish they do it in my area though as I would love to train as an electrician but can I get onto any apprenticeships? Nope! Im not saying the reason I dont get on to them because of my sex (its prob because Im not good enough lol) but Im glad to see companies trying to get women into the industry.

What do you qualified electricians think about women in the "male industry" and businesses trying to get more women involved?

ive seen a few, also in the alarm game,bt have a few as do british gas there should be more as female customers love a tradeswoman, must be a girlie thing:)

There's no such thing any more as a "male" industry if women want to come in and train I say fair play to them. I've worked with a few women sparks in the past some have been excellent some not so much (no different to male sparks there then)
To be honest these types of recruitment drive aimed at more women into construction, more black police officers, more gay postal workers, more train spotter farners etc annoy me. If someone wants to join an industry it matters not one jot what their gender, skin colour, sexual orientation or hobby is. What matters is their ability to learn then do a good job at the end of their training scheme.
If you want to train Han_av18 then I say go for it and the best of luck to you

If and when i employ someone (which i will in the future) it would matter not whether they were a fella or a lass. or whether they were gay or straight. How folk live and what they get upto at the weekend/in their own time dont interest me. Too many nosy folk about and busybodies and believe me...i dont like em. I would be interested only in whether they could get to work on time in a fit state to do the work and that when on the tools/job etc they could do it right. Nowt else......

The best commissioning engineer I’ve ever worked with was a girl, totally original thinking when we ran in to problems. I was sorry when we lost one of our best apprentices, boys don’t get pregnant! Both girls were as keen as mustard and could drink me under the bloody table!

There were this lass once called rose .she didn`t look much but by god could she get through some ale and you wouldn`t argue with er n all give you a right old belt n all she could.........

I should have added the apprentice worked with me for a while, it was like trying to keep up with Zebedee! She ran me ragged, never happier than when she was up to her eyeballs in s**t.

I did a rewire with a female spark, _____"one time".

I tied a new cable onto the old to pull down a metal conduit pipe. "pull it down I said" the cable moved a few inches, then a few minutes of silence.getting concerned I went downstairs to see what was the matter

Little female curled up on the floor with hands clasped and head bowed
She was upset.scrapes on her hand where the metal box had roughed it and worse, her nails had been damaged

Next plan was,I tie on,feed cable into pipe,I troop down, she troops up,I pull and get cable.I troop up,she troops down until the next one.
Up and down, up and down,up and down all day
If it was in and out, in and out,in and out instead of up and down,it would have pleased me more

But seriously, they are ok for the job, especially test and inspection
My age and experience was cancelled out by her enthusiasm and attention to detail and a lot of competence

Bring em on I say, theres room for a lot more in the trade

People whether male or female should be employed on competency....can you do the job or not. NOT because its a girl and not because some ayatollah at westminster has dreamed up another scheme towards equallaties or diversities. it should only be based on if you can do the job...or not.........

I've got nothing against female electricians, female refuse collectors or female anything else, but I don't see the need for these kind of 'initiatives' - it should be a woman's choice whether or not she should become an electrician. I would disagree than women are at a disadvantage when an all female electrical company can use that as a selling point whereas a company which advertised itself as 'all male' would probably get closed down.

You don't seem to see many 'initiatives' trying to recruit more male nail technicians or male teaching assistants...

I tried to poach a female sparks working for edf a few years back, she was the hardest working spark iv'e seen in a long time and all i could see was positives on having her onboard. I must admit prior to working with her i had heard of female sparks but as it was such a rare thing never thought much about it. I would have no hesitations taking on a female after that day.
It did make me smile when i saw the dents in her van though, so jury is out on the driving bit. ;)
