Just come across this

The Press Association: Bid to recruit female electricians

to try and encourage more females to train as an electrician. I think this is great (as Im a woman) and I know another training provider did this a few years ago up north to encourage women in this sector. I do wish they do it in my area though as I would love to train as an electrician but can I get onto any apprenticeships? Nope! Im not saying the reason I dont get on to them because of my sex (its prob because Im not good enough lol) but Im glad to see companies trying to get women into the industry.

What do you qualified electricians think about women in the "male industry" and businesses trying to get more women involved?

Am yet to meet a female - of whatever trade, who hasn't been pucker at her job. I once worked on a job where one of the ****ing Scaffs was a little Chinese bird. She was all of 5ft 2, but she could lump 20ft scaff poles off of the lorry.

I don't think that the industry, or any industry for that matter, needs 'pro women initiatives' as I think that actually sends the wrong message and 'positive discrimination' often just backfires on the rest of us (let's face it - the native British straight white male is probably the most 'positively' discriminated person on the planet).

BUT.... I love having women in our industry, and wish I could find one to bring on board my ship when it sails. In my experience, girls stop the lads from being idiots all day long, have a better work attitude, are less afraid of getting their hands dirty (nails despite!) and are every bit as capable technically and physically. They also don't hang around on their phones texting their girl friends whilst waiting for next tea break.

cheers you guys for the vote of confidence, just n eed to get some of the older generation male customers to think like you lot, get sick of hearing, are you qualified, you sure you can do the job, as i had again the other day, but luckly by the time the jobs finished they have changed there way of thinking, to why shouldn't a female be able to do the job, i think it great, good on you!

i wouldnt care if a tradesperson turnedup at my house if that person was green with orange spots, as long as they could do the job. ive only ever met one female apprentice when i worked in ireland, but all the blokes were falling over themselves to help her, ie pulling cable, lifting.

I dont think thats right, but thats not down to her, although she didnt discourage it. The management should of stopped it. How was she ever going to be classed as an equal, if she wasnt being treated as one?
good luck to anybody who enters an industry where theyre not perceived to fit in. That takes balls.

I guess this is an interesting topic, and not because of just encouraging female electricians, but infact and in reality, male electricians attitude towards the opposite genda. I am quite suprised by the amount of suspicious positive comments made, but my experience from the past and present does not reflect this facts. Lets not be hypocritical and TREV1, you've said it all(Respect). Genda should not be an issue, but the ability to do the job should be respected.

but thats what men do,on site it will be what a lass spark/plumber/alarm gal,no way im not working with a lass etc.then when a female spark turns up its all red faces and bending over backwards to help...ive done it myself..and i'll admit it..:blush5: but im older and wiser now..

I always think of the, let's say more demanding aspects of being an electrician, things like being able to terminate a 400mm 4 core SWA cable to a switchboard in restricted conditions!! Come to that even the pulling in of the said cable. That can be demanding even for a crew of burly guy's , let alone a crew of female electricians!!

Having never seen more than one female electrician in any one circumstance i'll have to reserve any judgements..lol!! Can't see much wrong with them being in the domestic side of things, or in the industrial fault maintenance side of things. It's on the heavy electrical installation side of things where my doubts lay....

harsh mogga..tho ive met an engineer or should that be a engineeress, who was stunning i was reduced to a quivering wreck..power and looks gets me every time..:ninja: and i done as i was told..for once..

I think its great that women want to become electricians.. i've got nothing against it.. as long as there willing to be treated the same as a male electrician...

i was talking to another electrician before and he said that they had a female apprentice working for them, he said that they wanted to get rid of her so bad but was afraid to just incase she took them to a tribunal.. she wouldnt go up steps, wouldnt go in atticks, wouldnt carry materials, wouldnt carry her tools, because she was a lady...

if she wants to be an electrician, act like one! dont play on "im a lady". you chose this career now ****ing put up with it.

when i was an apprentice if i refused to do half of what she refuses i would of been strip naked or sacked long ago.

of course, i am not stereotyping lady electricians as some male electricians are exactly the same.

employers should not be scared either, both sex's are equal in my eyes, if they are sh*t, get rid of them, male or female.
