I don't agree in buying few bits when you first start and building over the next year or two.

This holds back the apprentice's training and experience. You should approach your employer and ask if they will buy you a full set that you can repay over 12 months, taking it out of your wages. This benefits everyone in many ways.

You have your tools and can do anything your capability will allow you to and be cheaper. You're not paying tax and NI then buying your tools and depending on the company save on the VAT too.
 
good idea.a company i worked for once had this in place. not just for apprentices, but for everyone. if in wholesalers picking up gear, you saw some nice shiny tool that you wanted, ring office. they give you an order number specific to you, you get the tool/s on the company account, then they stopped it out of your wages. 1 hit for small stuff, or spread over a few weeks for more expensive items. the company claimed the vat back, so you got your tools vat free.
