Flex in a consumer unit

D

Dec1977

Hello there, Is there any regulation regarding the use of flex in consumer units. eg. Can a 1.5 x 3core be used as a supply cable from an 6a mcb to a fused spur feeding downlights? I came across this the day and I was curious if it was within the regs. Thanks for your time.

dont see a big deal with it , most houses the cable are all concealed so if it was done in flex or t&e you would never see it so how would it be rough , doesn't make sense

Virtually all new supermarket premesis and a large number of commercial builds have been installed in bs6500 yy lsoh flex for over half a decade in the uk its what the electrical design engineers request and the quotes from major electrical companies carrying out these works are based upon. When I was an appprentice it was in our course that flex and I mean I mean bog standard bs 3183y flex which you wouldnt use for fixed wiring anywhere i would have thought should not be used in fixed wiring in the uk nor should it be also I would like to think people would not use even yy in a domestic installation other sparks have said they would I just wouldnt I can imagine it would be rather hard to strip on 2nd fix close to back box entry in a plastered wall anyway.

Use a ringing tool
Btw I am not condoning using flex for fixed wiring, the regs imply a lot of things, but this does not mean that you would necessarily do it that way.

If it was pre-existing on an Eicr then I would not automatically condemn it either, subject to what has already been said.

Snips to knic all the way round simples

I wonder how factories wired in SY, CY and YY haven't burnt to the ground yet....

Must be just luck. The next time I do a job at a factory with multiple drives, valves and instrumentation I'm going to wire it all in twin and skin just to be sure.

I bet that load of crap isn't still up to scratch in 50 years time, like the metal containment and SWA cable systems of the past!! I suppose someone has convinced others that SY cable is armoured too !! lol!!

Let's hope there's no mad fork lift drivers in those factories!!
