Hi all ,been speaking to a sparky mate of mine today whos been out of work for a bit so he signed on.
And he's been given £300 by job centre to help him back into work,he has to provide reciepts for the stuff he's getting.
But he has had 17th edition exam paid for
17th IEE wiring regs
17th OSG
and passport to safety exam paid for!
So if any of you guys are struggling for a few week it may be worth signing on.
He signed on fri and was given the money the following wed!

Hi,

There are pots of money available for people depending on individual circumstances. If you are unemployed and signing on there is help and funding available, (bite the bullet and sign on even if it is something you have said you will never do as you may be surprised at what is available).

It used to be that there was only funding available if you were on benefits for over 12 months or you were even longer term unemployed, but there is now a rapid response fund available to people who are recently unemployed and who need funding to training to enable them to gain employment, whilst their cv is still in "good shape" shall we say.

It is not always necessary to have a guaranteed job outcome after the training but you need to show that the qualification gained from the training would be a requirement to gain employment. That is why it is easier to obtain funding for part p, 17th edition, inspection and test courses as they are industry recognised and a requirement for the vast number of current jobs.

There is also funding available if you are under threat of redundancy but have not left your current employment and if you are long term unemployed. There is also free help and advice available for people wishing to start self employed and their may be grants available to help with start up costs as well.

If you have been working for a company but have not obtained your part p, 17th edition or any other quals due to not needing them for your job for one reason or another. Then you find yourself unemployed and needing these quals to get to the interview stage and secure employment wouldn't it be better if you could obtain these qualifications in the shortest time possible. Would you not prefer to obtain the qualifications you need within a week instead of attending night school over several weeks or more. But hey ho the only place that you can do this is at the training centres that so many people on here slag off. I agree that there are many centres that promise people that after completing short courses they will become fully qualified electricians and that they will earn £50,000 + per year but there are many centres that do not, just as there are many tradespeople that rip off customers, complete poor quality work, leave mess and damage to flooring etc and there are many tradespeople that do not.

If you need any advice please do not hesitate to message me (to be honest I am more aware of funding and IAG available in the west midlands), and apologies for the rant at the end but I do get sick of the few bigoted people on forums.

A very good post Dave and all you say is perfectly correct this I now know by locating funding from the " Response to redundancy " programme a fund that was non existent as far as my local job centre was concerned I was only able to track down funding by phoning colleges in Leeds and Newcastle who do provide funding for training and tracing the money trail back to Europe and by speaking to my MEP who was astounded to hear of my treatment and as a result I start my 2391 on Saturday , Obviously you have a good deal of knowledge in this area I have had to secure this money through my own endeavors despite being thwarted by the very people who are employed ( on a very good wage ) to assist people back to employment I wonder how many other people have been denied access to this funding and consequently suffered needlessly !

i had funding frpm ReAct (£2500) and jobmatch (£1000), did my 2391 with jobmatch paying for it.
found a job in january and even had a phone call last friday to see if i needed any extra help from
jobmatch as there was extra funding if i needed it now that i was back in work.

Dave as with many training providers you paint a very rosy picture of how easy it is and that may well be the case in the West Midlands, but I was told on several occasions by my local job centre that they absolutely would not under any circumstances pay for me to do the 2382.
Adviser's Discressionary Funding does exist, but it is for more generic things such as buying a suit for an interview. They have a list of courses which are and are not allowed, and the 2382 is on the list of courses which are not allowed, partly because at around £200 it is too expensive - I was even called selfish by one adviser because I wanted £200 for one course which could pay for several people to go on 'box ticking' courses about CV writing, interview techniques or filling in forms. Until recently you had to have been unemployed for longer than 6 months before you could get any help, but now you have to have a job to go to before you can start a course which you can get funding for.

I organsied and paid for my 2382 myself on my credit card, and got a job (which required the 2382) a couple of weeks later. The DWP seems like a nice idea but from my experiences it is clealy unfit for purpose.

Apparently its to do with how many sparks are in your area...if enough...then no funding for spark training...Thats what they told my mate anyway...gave him funding for something they wanted him to train in as they advised would be more likely to gain employment... that was 1 year ago... now he works in something he has no training for?????

That makes sense - there seem to be a lot more sparks around here than there are vacancies, and the jobcentre seem to love pushing people into jobs they have no interest or experience in.

It seems that the Conservatives have wiped out most of the funding now.

Apparently they had £10,000 available for one person two weeks ago and now its limited to £300

They are asking unemployed to volunteer for want to work courses or pathways saying they will pay for courses, tools, etc. to get you what you need for gaining work. When you get there They are in the dark with little funding to offer.

If its redundancy it can be a little better or if your going to employ someone there are grants available.
