There seems to be more posts coming up there people are asking for advice and rather than us helping them they just get the usual "get an electrician in" reply.
Yes, before the idiotic replies of "so we should give everyone advice on how to....." No of course, not everyone comes across as being competent enough to do what is required but we should at least try and assess if they are.
What's the point in the forum if we are not helping people.

....would be better maybe?

I absolutely agree.
In an ideal world yes, but we all know that some members on here get a bee in their bonnets reading the simplests of requests for advice.
It would be great to see subsequent posters pull THAT poster back into line and offer an answer more along the lines of your solution.
But more often than not we get a train of replies jumping on the "Get a sparky in" or "You're not qualified to do that" bandwagon.

I for one will try to be aware of such posts and replies. And will in turn try to respond accordingly.

Q. My RCD is tripping

A. Do you have any test kit?

A. No

A. Get a competent spark in!
Don't agree, these can be very easy to solve at times, without need for a spark. Ok, it's free advice to a potential customer and a lost call out, but, it's some goodwill as well and that should lead to future referals and work for being a good spud.

What where you using at the time?
Kettle, Toaster, Iron, Oven, Hob, Immersion Heater, Just Turned on the Heating are common answers. We all know the common causes and faults, after the simple is done it's time to get a spark in.

yeah the rcd tripping is most likely down to a faulty appliance/high earth leak , has been on all the callouts i have had regarding rcd tripping

testing the circuits would be the correct way of course but simply unplugging the appliances and flipping the breaker back on then going round plugging in appliances 1 at a time till it blows, if all appliances plug in and it does not blow the rcd again, further investigation required

Definitely because how do they know what’s tripping it yes it could be a simple faulty appliance or it could be it was never fitted correctly or could be the RCD is faulty and tripping at a much lower threshold than the rating better safe than sorry in my opinion there are far too many variables with electrical work to start with safe isolation, good practice not having copper showing at your connections, verifying good earthing checking for bonding cable sizing& derating factors maximum demand and diversity breaker selection external influences and any other applicable regs, how not to wire a spur off a spur I could go on for days... these are all things you subconsciously think about when doing a job but does the average joe? or does he just think hmm here’s some cable and there’s a socket connect to it and run 10 sockets from it hey presto it works it must be ok.
I was in the wholesalers yesterday when a guy came in and started asking what he needed to change his consumer unit, thankfully the guy serving is clued up and said at least a 4 year apprenticeship and a good understanding of that big yellow book there’s a couple of guys behind you that fit the bill but imagine if that same guy had done a bit of research on somewhere like here first and thought to himself he could do it no problem after all it’s just sticking cables in terminals. Advice on changing a socket over maybe a light switch maybe but to be honest if your on here looking for advice like that it suggests your already out of your depth. We all have brain farts and we all need help and we all learn something new everyday but in the end There is a reason why it takes 4 years to learn what we do and in my opinion a couple of paragraphs isn’t really enough to impart the necessary knowledge and experience to do it right, to the regs and safely. And before anyone says I’m just bashing diyers I have a very good customer that I’ve been doing work for years for who has practically wired his own house with me checking, verifying and commissioning his work along the way and has a better standard of work than some so called sparks that I have met.

The only reason some people want to do it themselves, is to save themselves money. The UK EuroMillions winner won't be cutting their grass anymore, let along connecting up their new polished (not Polish) switch or new BQ light this weekend.

So they come on here, get advice for free from some spark, who would otherwise be paid to do the job.

Sound business advise advice :D

Working on that principle then all forums should not exist for giving advice.
People will have 'advisory' jobs and they require paying for all advice, be it to electricians, DIYer's or anyone else.
