There seems to be more posts coming up there people are asking for advice and rather than us helping them they just get the usual "get an electrician in" reply.
Yes, before the idiotic replies of "so we should give everyone advice on how to....." No of course, not everyone comes across as being competent enough to do what is required but we should at least try and assess if they are.
What's the point in the forum if we are not helping people.

I remember when I first started my electrical training. My neighbour approached me for some advice on his shed lights.

When I uttered the words "forum" He immediately said he didn't want to ask for advice on forums because all he would get was people unwilling to advise and tell him to get a Sparks in. I wonder if he had actually been on here prior to our conversation.

My opinion, it's subjective to the poster themselves. If they are willing to offer information on their capabilities, equipment, scenario, pictures etc then I'd be happy to make a judgement on what sort of advice Id give.

If they give nothing but a scenario then they will only get one answer.

When I started the internet hadn't even been invented...........

Old fart......

I find that if you explain what a specific task would entail, the OP is just as likely to turn to an Electrician, than do the work themselves.
You're right, to a degree. If a fellow electrician is asking for advice it generally stands out like a sore thumb, as it does with many others genuinely seeking it.
Many problems occur with people seeking information rather than advice....info, that is, of how to carryout work or solve a problem themselves by picking brains, the result being advice......to get an electrician involved, in many cases

Q. My RCD is tripping

A. Do you have any test kit?

A. No

A. Get a competent spark in!

Not always the case.

Some simple questions could identify a faulty appliance.

In fact I had the same scenario with a friend of mine who text me late a night.

Q. My rcd keeps tripping

A. When is it tripping? All the time or randomly?

Q. Randomly. Between every 10 mins or 30 mins.

A. Do you have any outside lights/equipment?

Q. Security light. Freezer in the garage.

A. Unplug one at a time and see if it stops.

2 hours later.

Q. Had the freezer unplugged. So far so good. Feel embarrassed, as I unplugged it I noticed water dripping from the socket.

A. I will put you in the diary to complete the necessary repairs.

:)
