Hi chaps,

Right...need some help.

Had my first call through for a house re-wire. As of yet i have not done any jobs of this magnitude and frankly dont want to get it wrong/lose the job. Unfortunately the lady left a message on my voice mail while i was working and i was unable to reach her when trying to call back so as it stands i know nothing about the job so you will have to bear with me on that front.

All i want to know for now is, (as i have only carried out CU changes, small installs, remedial repairs and testing jobs so far), what are the important and essential questions/information to gather from this lady in regards to the job so i can put together and a fair and representetive quote for her? I wouldnt dream of taking this on by myself, so two good friends both (professional sparks) currently on holiday in florida, have happily agreed to help me, both part peed and 17th edition etc.

I would hugely appreciate your input on this so i can approach her in a professional and trust worthy fashion.

Best regards, :grouphug:

Ben

Youve got some top advice here from hardened time served sparks, not much I can add really.

Think about which way circuits will go,as in up from floors or down(depends usually on access as mentioned by others), if your sockets are going to have to rop from the ceiling down to above skirting & its hard brick...ouch.

Great tip re: old houses having conduit you can reuse, seen it & done it. Also re : removing old cables, if they want sockets/switches in same places you'll probneed to remove, but bonus is the wall may be chased for you. Or if done 50 years ago the chase will be diagonal and no where near a safe zone!

Hard graft but great feeling when youve done it.

Being from an it background since your running new cabling to the various rooms had you considered running in a cat5 network at the same time or at least the cables for the same .If the lady has kids they could use it for gaming or the hubby for a home office if not it could be a fantastic future selling point.

being from an IT background, heard of wi-fi ? lol

yes well aware of wifi BUT

a proper network can be used for a multitude of things

phone lines
alarm lines
audio and video signals
home automation etc etc

my thoughts were a roll of cat 5 cable aint dear and would make an easy add on sale for the installerperhaps making our mans offering better than the alternates

Guys,

i really cannot express my grattitude regarding the feedback i have recieved on this post. Well surpassed any expectations i had for responses and input and i have done my best to keep pressing that thanks button! If i could buy you all a pint, i would in a heartbeat!!!

Hopefully ill be back in touch with the client today, i have spent my weekend drawing up T&C's and trying to put an informative package together for her.

Once again, THANK YOU all so much for your help! Absolute diamonds
