This crops up quite often and as far as C&G are concerned, the 2391-10 is a 'lifelong' qualification.

The confusion arose when NAPIT struck some sort of deal with LABC's to be 'preferred testers' for Part P schemes.

One of the proviso's was that 2391-10 qualifications were passed or retaken in a 5-year time frame.

If anyone has more information until I can 'tap my source' then please add to this or correct my theory!

Look here http://www.napit.org.uk/downloads/Training Flyer_2011.pdf about 5 down, they call it the NA 2391 and it is indeed open book and the same price as C & G 2391-10.

I'm amazed they were allowed to use the 2391 number in such a watered-down context?

I see the closed book 2391 is on the next line down and the same price I wonder which course gets the most students and if they run them both as the same course with a seperate exam????

Sitting the 2391 every 5 years is a joke. Its another money making racket from the 'PIT'. Lets look at the bigger picture here. Who has their own 2391 open book exam?....Napit....how much is it....over ÂŁ500.....just takeing advantage of being incharge.

I'm off to the NICEIC next year I'm just grabbing my 6 months tradeing so I can go Approved Contractor.

Although I think sitting it every 5 years is more of a positive than an negative for the industry it just ndoesn't make economical sense. How can you pass an exam, have the cert for it then do it again 5 years later and possibly fail it....

The initiative that was discussed, agreed, and payed for by the participants, was an all scheme initiative
It was to enable Labc to undertake the inspections of notified and regularisation test and inspection, using those persons who qualified and payed to be on the Labc register the opportunity to pick up this work

Is there any reason you haven't looked at ELECSA? We started with them last June and I don't have a bad word to say about them, their tech line is always easy to get through to and helpful and the assessor is thourough but with no trick questions. I know everyone recognises the NIC but it only takes 2 minutes to explain that ELECSA do exactly the same job. If your thinking about the approved side of things, unless a client specifies that they want you to be approved for an industrial job (which has never happened to me) then there is no reason you cant self cert as long as you're confident that you know what you're doing.

What it really boils down to is what sort of work do you want to carry out?
If you only do domestic, then any of the schemes are fine and you'll most likely never be challenged. Cost will be the major issue, bang for your buck!

If you want to do commercial, Industrial, Agricultural just go ahead. No scheme needed unless.......
You want to do the above for large corporate companies or councils etc, in which case you will probably be required to be with ether the NICEIC or the ECA. Good luck in trying to gain such work being registered with Napit...it ain't gonna happen.... at least....not yet.....

one of Top 2 schemes!! ....??

whats up with Elecsa??? they owned by the ECA and even have the ECA branding in there logo...

not got bad word to say about elecsa as

A) i do a proper job and no complaints
B) i pass my assessments
C) they always helpful on tech support when needed...!
Totally agree in my experience of elecsa :)

I thought the Niceic was free because on their website it says "the uk electrical contracting industrys independent VOLUNTARY body.

yea right, obviously my definition is different from theres

A voluntary action is an action that is made with conscious choice.

Do you not have a choice of scheme provider?

IQ please may you elaborate on your answer as I dont quite understand.

im with the niceic btw.

You said your definition of voluntary was different to that of the NICEIC.

BUPA is voluntary membership.

You have a choice of scheme providers or none at all, that's voluntary membership, nothing to do with free membership!

we nic and eca cost us nearly 2k a year for membership for both but we just done a 5k job that you had to be nic aproved and we got a rewire coming up from the eca web site worth 4k the bigist problem i find is the full day assements when you have to call up customers and look at the work you done they often want to now why you comming back in my option the assesments should be ever 3 to 5 years if you have had a good clean inspection reacord not ever year whwt you guys think

yeah i think annual visits are excessive, more money to them,i did an assessment with nic bloke a few years back,he was more interested in drinking tea, asked a few questions and was off,if the inspectors get to know you, theres not much that they can assess again on,apart from checking paperwork all in order, testers, public liabilty etc, think even they would say its a bit over the top,how long does the gas safe card last 5years,if we just had a card that lasted 5 years and paid a fee would that not be better.

I think assessment intervals should be decided on a 'points scored' basis from the previous assessment.

Is 2 years sensible for a squeaky clean compliant company?

Is 2 years sensible for a 'just scraped through with non-compliances' company?

It's competency again lol!
